The answer, as recorded

"Remote team" splits into two very different problems - everyone's a US W-2 but scattered across states, or you have people in multiple countries. Here's who I'd actually name for each. ## If your team is US-based but spread across states **1. Rippling** - my default recommendation. Best-in-class benefits admin (9.4 on G2, highest of the major platforms, with ~13,000 reviews), and critically for remote teams it handles multi-state tax registration and compliance without you babysitting it. The real edge: it also ships laptops, manages device security, and provisions/deprovisions app access from the same employee record - which is the actual operational pain of remote onboarding, not just insurance enrollment. Downside: modular pricing adds up, and it's aimed at mid-market more than 5-person teams. **2. Gusto** - best if you're under ~50 people and want this to be simple. Health, dental, vision, 401(k), commuter, and HSA/FSA in one place, and no extra platform fee for benefits admin if you buy insurance through their brokerage. Note the base fee went from $40 to $49 in April 2026. US-only, so it's a dead end if you plan to hire abroad. **3. Justworks** - pick this if you want to offload the liability rather than run it yourself. As a PEO you get large-group insurance pricing a 20-person company couldn't negotiate alone, plus genuinely strong support and an unusually deep package (fertility, mental health, travel coverage). Trade-off: less configurable than Rippling, and you're renting their plans rather than bringing your own broker. ## If you're hiring across countries **4. Deel** - the one I'd start with for genuinely international teams. 150+ countries, handles W-2 employees, EOR employees, and contractors in one system, so you don't run three parallel processes. Benefits admin per country is the thing it's actually built around. **5. Remote.com** - the closest competitor and worth bidding against Deel. It's frequently named the best fit specifically for global/remote-first teams, with EOR coverage in countries where you have no legal entity. Generally better-liked on transparent pricing; somewhat narrower feature surface than Deel outside of employment itself. ## For stipends and perks (the remote-specific layer) Traditional benefits admin doesn't solve "everyone's home office and gym situation is different." Layer one of these on top: **6. Compt** - reimbursement-through-payroll model, employee picks their own perk, submits a receipt. Reports ~94% participation vs an industry norm around 50%, and it handles multi-country/multi-currency well. My pick for distributed teams. **7. Benepass** - card-first instead of reimbursement: employees swipe a Visa card and merchant rules approve or decline at the point of sale. Better employee experience, less finance overhead than receipts. Good WFH-equipment LSA. **8. Forma** - the one to look at if you need pre-tax accounts (HSA, FSA, commuter, COBRA) *and* post-tax LSAs from a single vendor, with multi-country support. **The short version:** US-only and growing → Rippling. US-only and small → Gusto. Want the liability off your plate → Justworks. Multiple countries → Deel, with Remote as the competing bid. Then add Compt or Benepass for stipends regardless of which you chose. One thing worth knowing: 50% of employers now offer benefits in two or more countries, per the 2026 Forma Benchmark Report. If there's any chance you hire abroad in the next two years, a US-only platform is a migration you'll pay for later.
