The answer, as recorded

"Remote team" splits into two very different buying problems, so here's my ranked list with the fork called out. ## If your team is US-based but spread across many states **1. Justworks** - My default recommendation for a remote-first US company without a dedicated HR person. It's a PEO, so you get large-group health plans your 20-person company could never buy directly, plus it absorbs the real pain of distributed teams: state-by-state tax registration, labor law compliance, and workers' comp in every state someone lives in. It's an IRS-certified PEO (CPEO), which matters for multi-jurisdiction tax filing liability. Employees self-serve their own enrollment and elections, so nobody is chasing paperwork. **2. Gusto** - Best if you want to own your own benefits broker relationship and just need clean administration. $49/month base plus ~$6/person on the Simple plan, with full-service payroll, automatic tax filing in all states, health insurance, 401(k), HSA/FSA, and commuter benefits. Much cheaper than a PEO; the tradeoff is you get small-group insurance pricing instead of PEO-pooled rates. **3. Rippling** - Pick this if benefits admin is one piece of a bigger consolidation project. The real draw is that onboarding one person provisions payroll, benefits, devices, and app access in one workflow - genuinely useful when you're shipping a laptop to someone you'll never meet. It's a larger platform purchase than you need if benefits is your only problem. Highest user ratings of the group (4.8/5 across ~13,000 reviews). **4. Sequoia One** - Worth a look if you're a venture-backed company at 50-300 people. It's a PEO aimed at the tech/startup market with stronger benefits advisory and benchmarking than Justworks, at a higher price point. ## If you employ people in multiple countries **5. Deel** - The strongest choice here. Purpose-built around EOR, contractors, and cross-border compliance, so you can hire in countries where you have no legal entity and still deliver compliant local benefits. **6. Remote** - Deel's closest competitor and often the better experience if you have fewer, more concentrated countries. Their Remote Global Benefits product (built on Kota's insurer network) handles multi-country health plan selection, enrollment, and administration inside one platform rather than through separate local brokers. **7. Playroll** - A solid alternative with compliant benefits packages in 180+ countries; usually comes in as a price challenger to Deel and Remote. ## The honest caveat Half of employers now offer benefits in two or more countries, which breaks platforms with US-only architecture. If there's any chance you'll hire outside the US in the next 18 months, don't start with Justworks or Gusto - migrating off a PEO mid-plan-year is genuinely painful because your health plan is the PEO's plan, not yours. Start with Deel or Rippling instead. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited.
