Here's how I'd actually answer. "Best" depends almost entirely on your size and sector, so I've grouped it that way - but in order of who I'd name first. ## Large public districts (state reporting is the hard part) **1. Infinite Campus** - My default recommendation for a mid-to-large public district today. It's a single codebase, truly multi-tenant SaaS, with the deepest state-reporting coverage of anyone, and it's privately held (no PE churn). It's the #2 player at roughly 9-12.5% share. Implementation is demanding, and the UI is dated, but districts that run it tend to stay on it. **2. PowerSchool SIS** - The market leader at roughly 23-25% share, used in 90+ countries. Broadest ecosystem (Schoology LMS, Naviance, Unified Insights, Performance Matters), the largest integration partner network, and the easiest hiring pool for admins. Two real caveats: the January 2025 breach exported student and teacher tables across essentially its entire hosted customer base - 60M+ students' data including SSNs and medical info - and the company is now Bain Capital-owned, which has meant price pressure. Ask hard questions about their post-breach security posture and get contractual commitments in writing. **3. Edupoint Synergy** - The one I'd shortlist against Infinite Campus for large districts. Genuinely strong at data management and reporting, well regarded by the districts running it (LAUSD among them), and the MTSS/special-ed modules are better than most. Smaller vendor, so check that they have a real presence in your state. **4. Skyward (Qmlativ)** - Best pick if you want SIS *and* finance/HR/payroll from one vendor on one database. The Qmlativ rewrite is modern and the ERP side is genuinely good, which saves you an integration project. Strongest in the Midwest and Texas; thinner elsewhere. ## Private and independent schools **5. Veracross** - The clearest choice for independent day/boarding schools. One unified database across admissions, academics, billing, and advancement/alumni, which is exactly the thing independent schools otherwise stitch together from four systems. Expensive for its size tier. **6. Blackbaud Education Management** - Worth it specifically if fundraising and development are central to your operation and you're already in the Blackbaud/Raiser's Edge world. If you're not, the advancement integration is the only reason to choose it. **7. FACTS SIS** - The standard for faith-based and parochial schools. The real draw is tuition billing and financial aid workflows, which are best-in-class and tightly integrated. Holds about 13% share overall, largely on the strength of the Catholic school market. ## Small schools and charters (under ~1,000 students) **8. Alma** - The best modern UX in the category, fast to implement, honest pricing, and BeaconAI analytics are useful out of the box. Verify state reporting support for your state before signing - that's where small-school SIS products usually fall short. **9. Gradelink** - The value pick for small private and charter schools. Inexpensive, strong support reputation, low implementation burden. Not a fit if you need serious state compliance reporting. **10. QuickSchools / Jupiter Ed** - Worth a look if budget is the binding constraint. Jupiter in particular blends SIS and gradebook well for schools that don't want a separate LMS. ## Two things I'd tell you regardless of which you pick - **Budget for the migration, not the license.** Data migration and state-reporting validation routinely cost more than year-one subscription and take 9-18 months for a large district. The cheapest license with a bad implementation partner is the expensive option. - **Make vendor security contractual.** Post-PowerSchool, insist on breach notification SLAs, a recent SOC 2 Type II, subprocessor disclosure, and defined liability. The 2025 incident traced back to a contractor's credentials and an administrative maintenance tunnel - exactly the kind of thing a security questionnaire surfaces.
