The answer, as recorded

The honest answer is that "best" splits cleanly along one line: public district vs. private/independent school. Here's who I'd actually name, in order. ## Public school districts **1. Infinite Campus** - My default first recommendation for most districts now. ~8 million students across ~2,000 districts, one unified codebase (not a stitched-together portfolio of acquisitions), and strong state reporting. Districts shopping for a PowerSchool alternative keep landing here, which is why it's been taking share. Strongest in the Midwest and Mountain West. **2. PowerSchool SIS** - The safe, obvious choice and still the biggest: ~23% of the U.S. K-12 SIS market, 13,000+ customers, ~45M students. Deepest third-party integration ecosystem and every state reporting module you could want. Two caveats: the product line is acquisition-sprawl (Trillium, iNow, Atlas, etc. are all separate codebases), and the December 2024 breach of its PowerSource support portal exposed historical student and teacher data across a huge number of districts - ask pointed security questions during procurement. **3. Skyward** - Pick this if you want SIS and finance/HR/payroll from one vendor. The ERP side is genuinely good rather than an afterthought, which matters a lot for small-to-mid districts with a thin business office. Consistently ranks right behind PowerSchool on satisfaction. **4. Aeries SIS** - Effectively the standard in California and worth a look anywhere. Nonprofit-ish, low-drama, flexible, well-priced; the UI is dated and reviews are middling (3.5/5 on Capterra), but districts that run it tend to stay. **5. Edupoint Synergy** - The one to shortlist if data management, analytics, and special-education/MTSS workflows are your actual pain point. Favored by large districts with serious reporting demands. ## Private and independent schools **6. Veracross** - My top pick here. Purpose-built for independent K-12 on a single database, so admissions, billing, academics, and advancement/alumni share one record with no syncing. Best choice if you fundraise and run tuition in-house. **7. FACTS SIS** - The default for Catholic and other faith-based schools. Tuition management and financial aid assessment are integrated and genuinely best-in-class; the SIS itself is more basic than Veracross. **8. Blackbaud Education Management** - Mainly if you're already in the Blackbaud fundraising ecosystem. Strong development tools, fragmented modules, dated UX. ## Small schools and charters **9. Gradelink** and **10. QuickSchools** - For schools under a few hundred students where PowerSchool-class systems are overkill. Cheap, fast to stand up, no implementation consultant required. One practical note: whatever you shortlist, your state's reporting requirements will eliminate options faster than any feature comparison. Call three peer districts in your state on the same system before signing. **Sources:** - [10 best K-12 student information systems for 2026 - Jotform](https://www.jotform.com/blog/k-12-student-information-systems/) - [This is what the K-12 SIS market looks like - ListEdTech](https://listedtech.com/blog/this-is-what-the-k-12-sis-market-looks-like) - [Compare Infinite Campus and PowerSchool SIS - G2](https://www.g2.com/compare/infinite-campus-vs-powerschool-sis) - [PowerSchool vs Skyward PaC - PeerSpot/IT Central Station](https://Itcentralstation.com/products/comparisons/powerschool_vs_skyward-pac-student-management-system) - [SIS for a private K-12 school - Parse](https://www.parse.gl/prompts/p/i-am-looking-for-a-school-information-system-sis-for-a-private-k-12-school--c37e18b6-916a-462a-86df-207aafe90fc3) - [FACTS SIS vs Veracross - IT Central Station](https://www.itcentralstation.com/products/comparisons/facts-sis_vs_veracross) - [The Best Student Information Systems in 2026 - iTechGuides](https://www.itechguides.com/best/student-information-systems/) - [Aeries SIS reviews - Capterra](https://www.capterra.ca/software/5544/aeries)

Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
