The answer, as recorded

The honest answer is that "best" depends mostly on your school type and size - public districts, independent schools, and small private schools buy from almost completely different vendor pools. Here's who I'd actually name, in order, by category. ## Public K-12 districts **1. Infinite Campus** - My default recommendation for most public districts. It's the one that consistently rates highest among the big three in actual district reviews (3.7/5 on Gartner, ~203 reviews), and it wins head-to-head against Synergy on ease of use, meeting requirements, and support quality. Single-codebase cloud product, strong state reporting, roughly 9-12.5% market share. Fewer "we regret this" stories than its competitors. **2. PowerSchool** - The safe, obvious choice and the market leader (~23% share, ~13,000 customers, ~45M students). Pick it when you need the deepest integration ecosystem, the widest pool of staff who already know the system, and a vendor your state DOE definitely supports. The tradeoff: it's grown heavily by acquisition, so the product family is uneven and support quality varies a lot by module and region. **3. Skyward** - Strongest where it's strongest: Wisconsin, Texas, and districts that want SIS plus ERP/finance/HR from one vendor. Rates slightly above Infinite Campus on raw stars (3.8/5), and the data-mining and reporting tools are genuinely sophisticated. Reviewers do flag it as slow and not especially user-friendly. **4. Aeries** - Worth a serious look if you're in California. Dominant there, well-priced, and the state reporting is built for CALPADS rather than retrofitted. **5. Edupoint Synergy** - I'd name it for very large districts (10,000+ students), where it holds real share alongside eSchoolPlus. But go in with eyes open: it rates notably worse than its peers in reviews (2.7/5, 72 reviews), especially on ease of use and support. **6. Focus School Software** - The scrappy alternative, strong in Florida. Often the value pick for mid-sized districts that find PowerSchool pricing hard to justify. ## Independent and faith-based schools **7. Veracross** - My top pick for independent day and boarding schools. One relational database behind SIS, admissions, billing, and advancement, so you don't reconcile data between systems. Reviewers rate its ongoing support above Blackbaud's; it's less easy to set up. **8. FACTS SIS** - The standard for Catholic and other faith-based K-12 schools, and the second-largest SIS overall (~13% share). The reason to pick it is tuition management and financial integration - that's the piece it does better than anyone. **9. Blackbaud SIS** - Choose it when fundraising and institutional advancement are central to how your school runs; nothing else connects SIS to a development office as well. Reviewers find it easier to use and administer than Veracross but rate its support meaningfully worse (7.2 vs. Gradelink's 9.7 on support, for scale). ## Small schools **10. Gradelink** - If you're under a few hundred students, start here. It has the best ease-of-use and support scores of anything in this list (9.2 and 9.7) and doesn't require an IT department. **11. QuickSchools** - Similar niche, lighter and cheaper still; good for microschools and new schools that need something running this month. **Practical advice:** shortlist on two filters before features - does the vendor have proven state reporting in *your* state, and can you talk to three districts your size who've been live for 2+ years. Those two screens eliminate more bad fits than any feature matrix will, and SIS migrations are painful enough that you want to do this once.
