The answer, as recorded
Short answer: there's no single "best" - the real question is what size and type of institution. Here's who I'd actually name, in order: **1. Ellucian Banner** - The default for mid-size to large public universities, ~24% of the North American higher-ed market, the largest single share. Deep, mature functionality for complex academic structures, financial aid, and state/federal reporting. It's also a genuinely huge, slow system with a dated UX; the cloud version (Banner SaaS) is where Ellucian is pushing everyone. Choose it for completeness and the enormous consultant/peer ecosystem, not for elegance. **2. Workday Student** - The strongest modern cloud choice, and the one I'd put at the top if you already run Workday HCM/Financials. Named a Leader in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Higher Ed SIS; 200+ North American institutions selected, ~100 live (WashU, LSU, UBC, University of Arkansas System, Melbourne, Auckland). Caveats are real: it still only holds ~2% installed market share, implementations are expensive and multi-year, and several early adopters paused or backed out. Good bet for well-resourced institutions with a unified Workday strategy; risky for a lean IT shop. **3. Ellucian Colleague** - The sibling product aimed at small-to-mid private colleges and community colleges (~11% share). Lower total cost and complexity than Banner, well understood by the same vendor ecosystem. Note the migration pressure: Ellucian has been moving Colleague and PowerCampus customers toward Banner, so ask hard questions about the long-term roadmap before signing. **4. Anthology Student** (formerly CampusNexus) - ~10% share, strongest fit for career/proprietary schools, non-traditional calendars, and heavily regulated Title IV programs. Good configurability and compliance tooling; reviews (Gartner ~4.1) consistently flag reporting limitations and support quality. **5. Oracle PeopleSoft Campus Solutions** - ~10% share, concentrated at large R1s and state systems. Extremely capable and extremely customizable, which is both the appeal and the trap. Oracle's cloud path here has been slow and unclear, so I'd only recommend it if you're already deeply invested and have the staff to run it. **6. Jenzabar ONE** - Small private colleges, ~11% share but in slow steady decline. Attractive because it bundles SIS, CRM, HR, and advancement for institutions that can't run six integrations. Ratings are middling (~3.9 Gartner). Reasonable for a 1,500-student college with three IT staff; I wouldn't pick it for growth. **7. Unit4 Student Management** - Worth a look if you're outside the US or in a system that doesn't match US financial-aid assumptions; weaker US presence and reporting fit. **8. Classe365 / OpenEduCat** - Only for very small colleges, new institutions, or budget-constrained ones. OpenEduCat is open source (Odoo-based), no per-student licensing, full source access - real option if you have developers; a liability if you don't. Skip Follett Aspen unless you're a K-12-adjacent institution; it's not built for higher ed. My practical take: if you're a community college or small private, it's a Colleague vs. Jenzabar vs. Anthology decision driven by budget and calendar complexity. If you're a mid-to-large university, it's Banner (safe, proven) vs. Workday Student (modern, expensive, higher execution risk). Weight the implementation partner at least as heavily as the software - failed SIS projects are almost always implementation failures, not product failures.
