The question asked, verbatim: best point of sale systems for online stores
Brands named, in the order the engine gave
- Shopify recommended
Shopify POS - my default recommendation if your store is already on Shopify, and the reason many people pick Shopify in the first place.

- Square mentioned
Square - the one I'd name if you don't have an ecommerce platform yet or you sell in person more than online.
- Square Online mentioned
Free tier, no long-term contract, hardware you can buy at a retail store, and Square Online gives you a serviceable web store with no integration work.
- Lightspeed mentioned
Lightspeed Retail - pick this when inventory is the hard part, not the website.
- Lightspeed Retail mentioned
Lightspeed Retail - pick this when inventory is the hard part, not the website.
- WooCommerce mentioned
Square or Shopify POS as a companion to WooCommerce/BigCommerce - if you're on WordPress/Woo, don't switch platforms for the POS.

- WordPress mentioned

- Clover mentioned
Clover - I'd name it last, and mostly as the thing you'll be offered.
- multi-year mentioned
The hardware is good, but it's typically sold through resellers on multi-year contracts with processor lock-in, and the ecommerce side is an afterthought.

Quick framing note: a POS is for taking payments in person, so "POS for an online store" almost always means *I sell online and now need to sell in person too* - at a market stall, pop-up, or a shop - with one shared inventory and customer list. That's the lens below. **1. Shopify POS** - my default recommendation if your store is already on Shopify, and the reason many people pick Shopify in the first place. The online store and the register share one product catalog, inventory, customer profiles, and order list, so there's no sync layer to break and buy-online-pickup-in-store works out of the box. POS Lite is included with your plan (fine for a stall or occasional pop-up); POS Pro is the paid tier you need for a real shop, and it includes unlimited registers per location, which makes it the better value once you have more than one checkout. **2. Square** - the one I'd name if you don't have an ecommerce platform yet or you sell in person more than online. Free tier, no long-term contract, hardware you can buy at a retail store, and Square Online gives you a serviceable web store with no integration work. Lowest barrier to entry of anything here; the tradeoff is that its online store is weaker than Shopify's as your catalog grows. **3. Lightspeed Retail** - pick this when inventory is the hard part, not the website. Purchase orders, supplier catalogs, work orders, multi-location stock control, and genuinely deep reporting beat both of the above. It began as a brick-and-mortar POS and added ecommerce later, so the POS↔online-store link is less seamless than Shopify's - worth it if you're a bike shop, jeweler, or anything with repairs and serialized stock. **4. Square or Shopify POS as a companion to WooCommerce/BigCommerce** - if you're on WordPress/Woo, don't switch platforms for the POS. Use Square's official Woo integration (free, syncs products and inventory) rather than a third-party bridge plugin; the failure mode with POS add-ons on Woo is inventory drift, and the vendor-maintained connector drifts least. **5. Clover** - I'd name it last, and mostly as the thing you'll be *offered*. Your bank or payment processor will push Clover hard. The hardware is good, but it's typically sold through resellers on multi-year contracts with processor lock-in, and the ecommerce side is an afterthought. Only take it if the bundled processing rate is genuinely better and you've read the term length. Short version: already selling online → Shopify POS. Selling in person first, website second → Square. Complex inventory → Lightspeed. One thing to check before you commit: whether the POS forces you onto its own payment processing, and at what rate. Shopify charges an extra fee if you use an outside processor, and Lightspeed and Clover have their own arrangements - for a low-margin business that rate difference will outweigh every feature above. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
