The question asked, verbatim: best point of sale systems for online stores
Brands named, in the order the engine gave

Shopify POS - my default recommendation, and by a wide margin if your online store is already on Shopify.
- Shopify POS recommended
Shopify POS - my default recommendation, and by a wide margin if your online store is already on Shopify.
- Lightspeed mentioned
Weakest spot is deep retail inventory work - purchase orders, work orders, vendor management are thinner than Lightspeed's.

Square POS - best pick if you're not already committed to a platform, or if you want the lowest cost and least setup.

- Square Online mentioned
Square Online is included free, which is plenty for a simple catalog.
- Lightspeed Retail mentioned
Lightspeed Retail - choose this when the physical store is the real business and the website is secondary.
- Clover mentioned
Clover - worth naming because it's what you'll likely be offered by your bank or merchant services rep, and it's genuinely solid hardware with a large app market.
- Adobe Commerce mentioned
Adobe Commerce / BigCommerce + a POS connector - for enterprise or complex B2B catalogs where your ecommerce platform is a given and the POS has to adapt.

The answer, as recorded
Quick framing note: a POS is for taking payment in person, so "POS for an online store" almost always means you already sell online and now need in-person selling (retail shop, pop-up, market, trade show) that shares one catalog, inventory, and customer list with your site. That's how I'll answer. **1. Shopify POS** - my default recommendation, and by a wide margin if your online store is already on Shopify. The POS isn't an integration, it's the same system: one product catalog, one inventory count, one customer profile, one order record across web and counter. That means buy-online-pickup-in-store, exchange a web order at the till, and "ship from the other location" all just work. POS Lite is included with any Shopify plan; POS Pro (~$89/location/month) adds smart inventory, staff permissions, and retail analytics. Weakest spot is deep retail inventory work - purchase orders, work orders, vendor management are thinner than Lightspeed's. **2. Square POS** - best pick if you're *not* already committed to a platform, or if you want the lowest cost and least setup. Free POS software, flat 2.6% + 10¢ card-present processing, hardware from a $59 reader up, and it's the one POS that integrates broadly across outside ecommerce platforms rather than locking you to its own. Square Online is included free, which is plenty for a simple catalog. Also the right answer for appointments/services (salons, studios) and for food. Trade-off: inventory and reporting get shallow once you're multi-location with thousands of SKUs. **3. Lightspeed Retail** - choose this when the physical store is the real business and the website is secondary. It was built as a retail POS first, so you get serious inventory depth: purchase orders, supplier catalogs with ~millions of pre-loaded SKUs, work orders and repairs (great for bike, jewelry, pet, sporting goods), serial numbers, matrix variants, and sell-through/inventory-aging reporting. Its ecommerce side is capable but noticeably less fluid than Shopify's unified model, so if online is more than ~a third of revenue I'd lean back to Shopify. **4. Clover** - worth naming because it's what you'll likely be offered by your bank or merchant services rep, and it's genuinely solid hardware with a large app market. I'd only take it if the processing deal in front of you is clearly good; otherwise it's more locked-down than the three above, and online/inventory sync depends on third-party apps. **5. Adobe Commerce / BigCommerce + a POS connector** - for enterprise or complex B2B catalogs where your ecommerce platform is a given and the POS has to adapt. More integration work, more cost, but the right shape if you're already running one of those stacks. Honest short version: if you're on Shopify, use Shopify POS. If you're starting from zero or want cheap and simple, use Square. If you run a real stockroom, use Lightspeed. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
