The question asked, verbatim: best point of sale systems for online stores
Brands named, in the order the engine gave
- Shopify recommended
Shopify POS - The default recommendation, and the one I'd name first if you're already on Shopify or open to being on it.
- Shopify POS recommended
Shopify POS - The default recommendation, and the one I'd name first if you're already on Shopify or open to being on it.
- Square mentioned
Square - Best if you're not on Shopify and want the lowest friction.
- Online mentioned
Free POS tier, free reader, transparent flat-rate processing, and Square Online is a serviceable storefront.
- Lightspeed mentioned
The trade-off: its ecommerce and inventory depth is thinner than Shopify's or Lightspeed's once you pass a few hundred SKUs.
- Lightspeed Retail mentioned
Lightspeed Retail - The pick when inventory is the hard part: multi-location, variants/matrices, purchase orders, vendor catalogs, built-in demand forecasting.
- Clover mentioned
Clover - Worth naming only because it's ubiquitous via banks/merchant reps and the hardware is good.
- Manhattan ActiveStore mentioned
Manhattan ActiveStore / Aptos ONE / Oracle Retail Xstore - Enterprise unified commerce.
- Aptos mentioned
Manhattan ActiveStore / Aptos ONE / Oracle Retail Xstore - Enterprise unified commerce.
- Oracle mentioned
Manhattan ActiveStore / Aptos ONE / Oracle Retail Xstore - Enterprise unified commerce.
- Shopify Payments mentioned
Shopify Payments if you're on Shopify - no third-party setup, and critically it waives Shopify's extra transaction fee that applies when you use an outside gateway.

- PayPal / Venmo mentioned
PayPal / Venmo as a secondary button, not your primary processor.
- Adyen mentioned
Adyen or Braintree only once you're doing real volume and want interchange-plus pricing or multi-region acquiring - the savings don't justify the integration lift below roughly $1M/yr.
- Shopify POS Pro mentioned
My default: on Shopify → Shopify POS Pro + Shopify Payments + PayPal as a secondary button.

The answer, as recorded
Quick framing: "POS" usually means in-person selling hardware/software. If you run an online store, you're asking one of two things - a POS that syncs with your ecommerce (pop-ups, markets, a retail location), or just the checkout/payment stack for online-only. Here's both. ## If you sell online and in person (true POS) **1. Shopify POS** - The default recommendation, and the one I'd name first if you're already on Shopify or open to being on it. Inventory, customers, orders, and discounts are one dataset across web and register - not an integration that drifts. POS Lite is included with any Shopify plan; POS Pro (~$89/location/mo) adds smart inventory, staff permissions, and omnichannel fulfillment (buy online/pick up in store). It's consistently ranked #1 for omnichannel in 2026 reviews. **2. Square** - Best if you're *not* on Shopify and want the lowest friction. Free POS tier, free reader, transparent flat-rate processing, and Square Online is a serviceable storefront. The trade-off: its ecommerce and inventory depth is thinner than Shopify's or Lightspeed's once you pass a few hundred SKUs. **3. Lightspeed Retail** - The pick when inventory is the hard part: multi-location, variants/matrices, purchase orders, vendor catalogs, built-in demand forecasting. Apparel, bike shops, specialty retail. Costs more and takes real setup time, but it outgrows Square rather than the reverse. **4. Clover** - Worth naming only because it's ubiquitous via banks/merchant reps and the hardware is good. Ecommerce is bolt-on and processing is often locked to whoever sold it to you. I'd choose it for food service, not for an online store adding retail. **5. Manhattan ActiveStore / Aptos ONE / Oracle Retail Xstore** - Enterprise unified commerce. Only relevant at hundreds of stores; ignore otherwise. ## If you're online-only (what you actually need is a payment stack) **Shopify Payments** if you're on Shopify - no third-party setup, and critically it waives Shopify's extra transaction fee that applies when you use an outside gateway. ~2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, dropping on higher tiers. **Stripe** on any other platform (WooCommerce, custom, headless). Best API, best custom checkout, strong fraud tooling (Radar), Stripe Tax and Billing if you add subscriptions. Same headline 2.9% + 30¢, plus ~1% FX and ~1.5% international card surcharges. **PayPal / Venmo as a secondary button, not your primary processor.** Highest rates (up to ~3.49% + 49¢) but it measurably reduces cart abandonment because buyers trust it. Add it alongside, don't build on it. **Adyen or Braintree** only once you're doing real volume and want interchange-plus pricing or multi-region acquiring - the savings don't justify the integration lift below roughly $1M/yr. **My default:** on Shopify → Shopify POS Pro + Shopify Payments + PayPal as a secondary button. Not on Shopify and selling in person → Square if simple, Lightspeed if inventory is complex. Online-only and not on Shopify → Stripe + PayPal, and skip POS entirely. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
