The answer, as recorded

One framing note up front, since it changes the answer: a pure online store doesn't really need a "POS" - it needs a checkout/payment stack. "POS for online stores" almost always means one of two things, so here are both. ## If you sell online *and* in person (true omnichannel POS) 1. **Shopify POS** - my default recommendation. If your store is already on Shopify, the POS is the same system, not an integration: one product catalog, one inventory count, one customer record. That's what makes buy-online-pickup-in-store and online returns in-store actually work without reconciliation headaches. POS Lite is included with any Shopify plan; POS Pro (~$89/location/mo) adds the retail features you'd actually want. 2. **Square** - best if you're *not* on Shopify. It's the most platform-agnostic option and integrates with essentially every major ecommerce platform, plus the free tier and free online store make it the cheapest way to start. Hardware is cheap, setup is same-day. Weaker once your inventory gets complex. 3. **Lightspeed Retail** - pick this when inventory is the hard part: thousands of SKUs, variants, purchase orders, vendor catalogs, multi-location stock transfers, sell-through and inventory-aging reports. It's the strongest retail back office of the three. The tradeoff is that its ecommerce side (eCom) is genuinely a separate product bolted on, so the online experience is a step behind Shopify's. 4. **Clover** - worth naming because it's what your bank or payment processor will push on you. Flexible app ecosystem, decent hardware, but contracts are often tied to a specific processor and resale terms vary a lot. Read the agreement; don't sign a multi-year lease. 5. **Adobe Commerce / BigCommerce + a POS connector** - only if you're already enterprise on those platforms. Not where I'd start. ## If you're online-only (what you actually need is checkout) 1. **Stripe** - the default for physical goods and anything custom. 2.9% + 30¢, best APIs, Stripe Tax and Radar available as add-ons. You are the merchant of record, so global VAT/GST compliance is your problem. 2. **Shopify Payments** - if you're on Shopify, just use it. Lowest friction, and Shopify penalizes you with extra fees for using a third-party gateway. 3. **PayPal (+ Braintree)** - not as your only processor, but as a second button. Measurable conversion lift from buyer trust, especially cross-border. 4. **Paddle** or **Lemon Squeezy** - only for digital goods, SaaS, or subscriptions. They act as merchant of record and absorb global sales tax/VAT entirely. You pay ~5% + 50¢ for that, which is a lot on physical-goods margins but cheap relative to hiring someone to handle tax registrations in 40 jurisdictions. **My short answer:** on Shopify → Shopify POS + Shopify Payments. Not on Shopify, simple inventory → Square. Complex retail inventory → Lightspeed. Selling digital products → Lemon Squeezy or Paddle and skip POS entirely. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
