The question asked, verbatim: best payment processing for nonprofits
Brands named, in the order the engine gave
- Stripe mentioned
Stripe (with the nonprofit discount) - the default for most orgs

- Zeffy mentioned
Zeffy - if you're small and fee-sensitive
- Givebutter mentioned
Givebutter - best all-in-one that isn't tip-dependent
- PayPal mentioned
PayPal - add it as a second option, not your only one
- Dharma Merchant Services mentioned
Dharma Merchant Services - if you're processing $10k+/month
- Square mentioned
Square - only if in-person giving is central
- Donorbox mentioned
Donorbox - capable, but priced poorly

The answer, as recorded
Here's how I'd rank them, depending on where you sit: **1. Stripe (with the nonprofit discount) - the default for most orgs** 2.2% + 30¢ once approved, vs. their standard 2.9% + 30¢. It's the processor nearly every donation platform sits on top of, so you keep flexibility. Caveats: the discount isn't automatic - you apply with your EIN/IRS determination letter, and you need 80%+ of your Stripe volume to be tax-deductible donations. Amex, memberships, ticketing and international cards are excluded or cost more. ([checkoutpage.com](https://checkoutpage.com/blog/stripe-for-nonprofits), [givebutter.com](https://givebutter.com/blog/stripe-for-nonprofits)) **2. Zeffy - if you're small and fee-sensitive** Genuinely $0: no platform fee, no processing fee, no subscription. They survive on optional donor tips at checkout (~80% of donors tip). The tradeoff is real - you're asking your donors to pay Zeffy, and the tip prompt is part of your checkout flow. For a small org where 3% is the difference between a program running or not, it's the obvious pick. ([zeffy.com](https://www.zeffy.com/blog/fundraising-app)) **3. Givebutter - best all-in-one that isn't tip-dependent** Free if donor tips cover it; otherwise 1% on donation forms, 3% on fundraising pages, 5% on events/auctions, plus 2.9% + 30¢ processing. Strong campaign, peer-to-peer and event tooling built in, which saves you buying a second product. ([charitycharge.com](https://charitycharge.com/?p=7834)) **4. PayPal - add it as a second option, not your only one** 1.99% + 49¢ for confirmed 501(c)(3)s. Lower percentage than Stripe but a much higher fixed fee, so it wins on large gifts and loses badly on small ones (on a $25 donation PayPal costs ~99¢ vs Stripe's ~85¢; on $500 PayPal is ~$10.44 vs ~$11.30). Worth offering purely because some donors won't give any other way. ([rallyup.com](https://rallyup.com/learn/paypal-vs-stripe-which-payment-processor-is-best-for-nonprofits/), [societ.com](https://www.societ.com/?p=101868)) **5. Dharma Merchant Services - if you're processing $10k+/month** True interchange-plus: interchange + 0.20% + 11¢ online, + 0.15% + 8¢ in person, $15/month for nonprofits. At volume this beats flat-rate pricing meaningfully, and they have a long-standing reputation for honest, transparent dealing in an industry that doesn't. Not worth the setup below ~$10k/month. ([merchantmaverick.com](https://www.merchantmaverick.com/?p=389), [nerdwallet.com](https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/small-business/dharma-merchant-services-review)) **6. Square - only if in-person giving is central** 2.6% + 10¢, no nonprofit discount. The hardware and point-of-sale experience are the reason to choose it - galas, thrift shops, festival booths. ([bloomerang.com](https://bloomerang.com/blog/nonprofit-credit-card-processing)) **7. Donorbox - capable, but priced poorly** 5.15% + 30¢ all-in standard (2.95% platform + 2.2% Stripe), or $150/month for Pro. Fine product; Givebutter does most of the same work for less. ([zeffy.com](https://www.zeffy.com/compare/zeffy-vs-donorbox)) **One thing worth knowing:** the comparison articles above are mostly published by the platforms themselves - Zeffy's fee comparisons are Zeffy marketing, Givebutter's Stripe guide is Givebutter marketing. The underlying rate numbers check out, but verify current pricing on each provider's own page before committing. **If I had to pick one:** under ~$50k/year raised, Zeffy. Between that and ~$500k, Givebutter or Stripe direct. Above that, get a Dharma quote and compare it against your actual interchange mix.

Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
