The answer, as recorded

Here's how I'd actually rank these, depending on where you sit: **1. Stripe (with the nonprofit discount) - the default I'd recommend for most orgs.** Verified 501(c)(3)s get 2.2% + 30¢ with no monthly or setup fee, and it's the processor nearly every donation tool and CRM integrates with. If you have any technical help at all, this gives you the lowest real cost with the fewest lock-in problems. Downside: Stripe is plumbing, not a fundraising platform - you need something on top of it. **2. Givebutter - best all-in-one if you don't want to build anything.** Runs on Stripe underneath but adds donation forms, a free CRM, recurring giving, peer-to-peer campaigns, and auto-receipts. With optional donor tips enabled you pay 0% platform and 0% processing; with tips off it's a flat 3% plus standard processing. The honest caveat: "free" means your donors are being asked to cover your costs at checkout, which some boards dislike. **3. Zeffy - genuinely $0 if you can live with the tipping model.** Zeffy absorbs both platform and card fees, so a $100 gift nets you $100. US and Canada registered nonprofits only. Same caveat as Givebutter but more aggressive - the donor tip prompt is prominent, and that's the whole business model. Great for small orgs where every percent matters. **4. PayPal - add it as a second option, not your primary.** Confirmed 501(c)(3)s get roughly 1.99% + 49¢ with no monthly fee. The percentage is the lowest of the bunch, but the fixed fee punishes small gifts, and the donor UX and reporting are weaker. Worth enabling because a real slice of donors simply trust PayPal and won't type a card number. **5. Square - if a meaningful share of your giving is in person.** Galas, festivals, church collections, merch tables. The hardware and setup are the easiest in the category and it handles offline/intermittent-connection situations well. Not where I'd run online recurring giving. **6. Bloomerang Payments / iATS - if donor management is the real problem.** Pick these when your actual pain is messy donor data, not fees. Bloomerang Payments bundles processing into its CRM; iATS is nonprofit-only and common in legacy fundraising stacks. You'll pay more per transaction for the integration. Two things that matter more than the rate: **recurring giving retention** (whether failed cards auto-retry and update - Stripe and anything built on it does this well) and **whether you own your donor data** if you leave. On small average gifts, the fixed per-transaction cents hurt more than the percentage, so a $20-average org should weigh Stripe/Givebutter over PayPal's headline 1.99%. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
