## My actual picks **1. Stripe - the default if you have any web presence.** Eligible 501(c)(3)s get **2.2% + 30¢** instead of 2.9% + 30¢ - you have to request it by emailing [email protected], and it generally requires ~80% of your volume to be tax-deductible donations. Best recurring-donation engine, ACH support, and nearly every nonprofit CRM/donation form plugs into it. Downside: it's a payments rail, not a fundraising product - you or your platform builds the donor experience. ([Stripe support](https://support.stripe.com/questions/does-stripe-offer-a-fee-discount-for-non-profit-organizations), [Zeffy breakdown](https://www.zeffy.com/blog/stripe-for-nonprofits)) **2. PayPal (and Braintree) - the cheapest card rate among the majors.** Verified 501(c)(3)s get **1.99% + $0.49** vs. the standard 2.89% + $0.49, and Braintree offers the same rate for cards and digital wallets. That 49¢ fixed fee means PayPal wins on gifts above roughly $75 and Stripe wins on small ones - so most orgs run both. PayPal also converts a chunk of donors who won't type a card number. ([Societ](https://www.societ.com/?p=101868), [Braintree fees](https://history.paypal.com/us/enterprise/paypal-braintree-fees)) **3. Zeffy - if you're small and fee-sensitive.** Genuinely **$0** to the org: no platform fee, no processing fee. It's funded by an opt-in donor tip at checkout (they claim ~80% of donors tip). The real trade-off is that your donors see a tip prompt on your form, which some boards hate, and you're dependent on a startup's economics. For a volunteer-run org under a few hundred thousand in online giving, it's hard to argue with free. ([Zeffy](https://www.zeffy.com/blog/fundraising-app), [review](https://dupple.com/reviews/zeffy)) **4. Givebutter - the better-looking free option.** Same tip-funded model but stronger campaign pages, peer-to-peer fundraising, events, and ticketing, with a free tier and optional paid plans. Pick this over Zeffy if you run events and P2P campaigns and want the polish. ([comparison](https://www.g2.com/compare/givebutter-vs-zeffy)) **5. Donorbox - the sane middle.** Modest platform fee layered on top of Stripe/PayPal processing, no donor tip prompt, good recurring-giving and text-to-give. You pay a real fee for a cleaner donor experience. ([comparison](https://www.g2.com/compare/donorbox-vs-givebutter-vs-zeffy)) **6. Bloomerang, Classy, or Neon One - if the CRM is the point.** Once you're past ~$500K online and need donor records, segmentation, and acknowledgment letters tied to payments, choose the CRM first and accept its bundled payments. Processing rates are mediocre; the integration is what you're buying. ([Bloomerang](https://bloomerang.com/blog/nonprofit-credit-card-processing), [Neon One](https://neonone.com/resources/blog/paypal-nonprofit/)) **7. Square - only for in-person.** 2.6% + 10¢ for tap/dip at galas, bake sales, and festivals. Simple hardware, no monthly minimum. Don't build your online giving on it. ([Harness](https://goharness.com/blog-posts/square-alternatives-for-nonprofits)) **8. EBizCharge or an interchange-plus merchant account - only at high volume.** Once you're processing millions, interchange-plus beats flat-rate pricing meaningfully. Below that the setup overhead isn't worth it. ([eBizCharge](https://ebizcharge.com/?p=85319)) ## The thing that matters more than the rate Turn on **ACH / bank transfer** for gifts over ~$1,000. A $10,000 card gift costs you $220 at Stripe's nonprofit rate; the same gift via ACH typically costs a capped few dollars. That single switch saves most mid-size orgs more than any processor shopping will. Also: **don't make the donor-covers-fees checkbox the centerpiece of your strategy** - adoption is real but partial, and it doesn't change your underlying cost structure. My honest default for a typical mid-size US 501(c)(3): **Stripe at the nonprofit rate as the primary rail, PayPal enabled alongside it, ACH for major gifts.** If you're small and genuinely counting pennies, Givebutter or Zeffy instead.
