Great fit for Vercel/serverless/Next.js shops in particular.
- Next.js mentioned

- Grafana Cloud mentioned
Grafana Cloud (Loki) - Pick this if you're Kubernetes-native or already using Prometheus/Grafana.
- OpenObserve mentioned
OpenObserve - The best self-hosted "Datadog alternative" right now.
- ELK / OpenSearch mentioned
ELK / OpenSearch (self-hosted or Elastic Cloud) - Only if you need real full-text search across billions of events with complex queries, or you already have Elastic expertise in-house.
- Elastic Cloud mentioned
ELK / OpenSearch (self-hosted or Elastic Cloud) - Only if you need real full-text search across billions of events with complex queries, or you already have Elastic expertise in-house.
- GCP mentioned
Your cloud's native tool (CloudWatch Logs / GCP Cloud Logging) - Worth naming because it's the honest answer at the very earliest stage: it's already there, costs nothing to set up, and is fine until the query experience starts hurting.

# Log management for startups - what I'd actually pick Ordered roughly by who I'd recommend them to most often. **1. Better Stack** - My default recommendation for most startups. Logs + uptime monitoring + on-call/incident alerting in one product, which is exactly the bundle a 5-30 person team needs. Pricing is straightforward per-GB (roughly $0.10-0.15/GB ingest plus a few cents/GB/month retention, all of it searchable - no separate "indexing" fee), so your bill doesn't surprise you. Starts around $24/mo. Weakness: not a serious SIEM, and less deep than Datadog on APM. **2. Axiom** - Best value if you're log-heavy and cost-sensitive. Generous free allowance (500 GB/mo ingest on the free personal plan; 1 TB included in the $25/mo Cloud platform fee), and it's built on object storage so retention is cheap rather than punitive. Great fit for Vercel/serverless/Next.js shops in particular. Weakness: a smaller ecosystem and fewer turnkey integrations than Datadog. **3. Grafana Cloud (Loki)** - Pick this if you're Kubernetes-native or already using Prometheus/Grafana. Loki only indexes labels and keeps the rest as compressed chunks, so ingest at volume is dramatically cheaper than index-everything tools. Free tier is real, and paid starts around $19/mo. Weakness: full-text search is weaker than Elastic, and label/cardinality discipline is something you have to actually learn. **4. Datadog** - The one to choose when engineering time costs more than money, or when you want logs correlated with traces and infra metrics in one pane. 700+ integrations, automatic parsing, ML anomaly detection - nothing else is as polished out of the box. The catch is severe: ~$0.10/GB ingest *plus* ~$1.70 per million events to index, on top of per-host infra and APM fees. Comparisons put a 100-host deployment near $8,500/mo vs. under $1,000 on Better Stack. Fine at seed-with-real-funding; a trap if you're watching runway. **5. OpenObserve** - The best self-hosted "Datadog alternative" right now. Open source, single binary, covers collection, search, dashboards, and alerting, with very low storage cost. Choose it if you have someone who genuinely enjoys running infrastructure, or if data residency rules force self-hosting. **6. ELK / OpenSearch (self-hosted or Elastic Cloud)** - Only if you need real full-text search across billions of events with complex queries, or you already have Elastic expertise in-house. Most capable raw search engine of the bunch; also the highest operational tax. For a startup I'd generally skip it. **7. Your cloud's native tool (CloudWatch Logs / GCP Cloud Logging)** - Worth naming because it's the honest answer at the very earliest stage: it's already there, costs nothing to set up, and is fine until the query experience starts hurting. Plan to migrate off it, don't build on it. **Short version:** Better Stack if you want one tool that does logs *and* alerting; Axiom if log volume is your main cost worry; Grafana Cloud if you're already in the Prometheus world; Datadog if you're funded and want the best UX. One caveat on the numbers: several of the pricing comparisons that surfaced are aggregator/SEO sites, and vendor pricing changes often - confirm current rates on the vendors' own pricing pages before you commit, especially Datadog's indexing line, which is where the bills actually explode. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
