The answer, as recorded

Quick caveat on the research: most "best log management 2026" listicles that come up are either vendor-owned content marketing (Better Stack, OpenObserve, Logz.io, SigNoz all publish their own rankings) or thin SEO sites. So the rankings below are my own; I used the searches mainly to verify current pricing and free tiers. ## What I'd actually recommend, in order **1. Grafana Cloud (Loki)** - My default pick for most startups. The free tier is genuinely production-usable: 50 GB logs, 50 GB traces, 10k metric series, 3 users, 14-day retention, permanent rather than a trial. You also get metrics, traces, and dashboards on the same bill instead of buying three tools. The big structural advantage: Loki indexes only labels, not log content, which is why it stays cheap at volume, and it's OSS underneath so you can self-host later without rewriting your instrumentation. Downside: label-based querying (LogQL) is a real learning curve if you're used to full-text search, and cardinality mistakes will bite you. ([Grafana Cloud pricing](https://www.cloudzero.com/blog/grafana-cloud-pricing/), [Grafana vs Datadog cost](https://tech-insider.org/grafana-vs-datadog-2026/)) **2. Better Stack** - Best fit if your team is under ~10 people and you'd rather buy one thing than four. Logs are roughly $0.10/GB ingest + $0.05/GB/month retention, and it bundles uptime monitoring, status pages, on-call, and incident management. For a startup, consolidating "who gets paged" and "where are the logs" into one vendor is worth more than marginal query power. Live Tail plus SQL querying is a nicer DX than Loki for most people. Just note its own comparison blog posts are marketing, not research. ([Better Stack pricing comparison](https://betterstack.com/community/comparisons/better-stack-vs-grafana-cloud/)) **3. Axiom** - The one I'd pick if you're serverless-heavy (Vercel, Cloudflare Workers, Lambda). No indexing surcharge, everything's queryable, and the Personal tier is free with 500 GB ingest compute / 25 GB storage / 30-day retention; the team plan is $25/month with ~1 TB ingest compute included. Pricing shifted to a compute-credit model, which is harder to forecast than flat per-GB, so model it before committing. ([Axiom pricing](https://axiom.co/pricing), [Axiom review](https://cubeapm.com/blog/axiom-pricing-review/)) **4. Sentry** - Not log management, but I'd install it before any of the above. At seed stage, ~90% of what you actually want from logs is "what broke, for whom, with what stack trace," and Sentry answers that far better than a log search box. Treat it as complementary, not competing. **5. AWS CloudWatch Logs** - Only if you're all-in on AWS and want zero setup. It's the path of least resistance and the IAM story is already solved. The UX is poor, cross-service querying is painful, and costs creep quietly - but "already there" beats "perfect and unconfigured." **6. New Relic** - Worth a look purely for the free tier: 100 GB/month ingest, 1 full user, unlimited basic users, permanent. If you want full APM and not just logs on a zero budget, this is the most generous offer on the market. The catch is the per-full-user pricing, which gets expensive as your engineering team grows. ([New Relic free tier](https://newrelic.com/pricing/free-tier)) **7. SigNoz or OpenObserve (self-hosted)** - Pick these if you have a platform engineer who *wants* to own the stack, or data-residency requirements. Real money saved (Loki self-hosted at 100 GB/day is roughly $8k/year, mostly S3), but you're now on call for your observability system. Most startups shouldn't take that trade. ([SigNoz comparison](https://signoz.io/blog/best-log-management-tools/), [OpenObserve](https://openobserve.ai/blog/log-management-tools/)) **8. Datadog** - Only once you're funded and the cost of engineers debugging across four tools exceeds the bill. It's the best product here and nobody disputes that; it's also the one that produces horror-story invoices, since $0.10/GB ingest plus $1.70/GB *indexed* means 100 GB/day is roughly $107k/year for logs alone. Don't start here. ([Datadog vs Grafana](https://betterstack.com/community/comparisons/datadog-vs-grafana-cloud/)) **Papertrail** I'd skip in 2026 unless you specifically need dead-simple syslog tailing; it's stable but no longer moving. ## Short version Start with **Grafana Cloud free + Sentry**. If you want less to operate and one vendor for logs/uptime/on-call, use **Better Stack** instead. If you're serverless, **Axiom**. Revisit Datadog when someone else is paying. One cost tip that matters more than tool choice: decide early what you *don't* ship to your log vendor. Debug logs from a chatty service will dominate your bill on any platform on this list.

Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
