The answer, as recorded
For a small business (roughly 1-15 techs), here's who I'd actually point you to, in order: **1. Jobber - the default pick for most small service businesses.** It's the one I'd start with if you don't have a strong reason to go elsewhere. Clean scheduling, quoting, invoicing, client hub, and a technician mobile app that people actually use. Strong QuickBooks Online sync. Pricing runs roughly **$25-$249/mo** depending on tier and crew size, with a 14-day trial and no implementation fee. Best fit around 5-25 techs, but works fine solo. **2. Housecall Pro - fastest to get running, best if you're a 1-8 person home-services shop.** Plumbing, HVAC, electrical, cleaning. You can be live in days. Built-in consumer-facing booking, payments, and marketing (postcards, review requests) that Jobber charges more for or doesn't match. Starts around **$59/mo for one user**, ~$299/mo for up to eight. Pick this over Jobber if technician adoption and speed matter more than reporting depth. **3. Workiz - best for dispatch-heavy, call-driven trades.** Locksmiths, garage doors, junk removal, appliance repair - anything where the phone rings and you dispatch same-day. It has the strongest built-in phone/call-tracking of this group and rates well with users (~4.5/5). Worth a look if Jobber's scheduling feels too calendar-centric for how you work. **4. ServiceM8 - best for solo operators and 2-5 person crews on a budget.** Job-based pricing rather than per-user seats, so it stays cheap when you're small. Very strong on checklists, photos, and on-site quoting. Mac/iOS-leaning - that's the main caveat. **5. Service Fusion - if you need good inventory and field-to-office flow at a flat rate.** Unlimited users on its plans, which is unusual and makes it cheap once you add office staff. Scores well on invoicing and payment integration (~4.1/5). **6. FieldEdge - if you run HVAC/plumbing with service agreements and QuickBooks Desktop.** Its dispatch board and maintenance-contract handling are genuinely better than the lighter tools, and it's one of the few with real QuickBooks *Desktop* integration. ~4.2/5. Costs more, around the $200+/mo range. **Who I'd skip: ServiceTitan.** It's the best product in the category and the wrong product for you - it's enterprise software priced at 5-10x the alternatives, aimed at 20+ employee and multi-location operations, with a real implementation project attached. Revisit it at 20-30 techs. **Short version:** trial Jobber and Housecall Pro side by side for two weeks - they're both free to try and that comparison resolves the decision for most people. Go Workiz instead if you're dispatch-and-phone driven, ServiceM8 if you're a one-truck operation watching every dollar.
