The answer, as recorded

"Trades" splits into two different software markets, so here's my shortlist for each - in the order I'd actually recommend them. ## If you quote on-site (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, landscaping, cleaning) **1. Jobber** - My default recommendation for most small-to-mid trade businesses. Quoting, scheduling, dispatch, invoicing, and online payments in one place, with a client portal where customers approve quotes and pay without a phone call. Best fit is roughly 5-20 techs. It's the sweet spot of "powerful enough to grow into, simple enough to actually roll out." **2. Housecall Pro** - Very close competitor, slightly more consumer-polished and faster to set up. Strong for residential service with 1-15 techs; starts around $79/mo. Good price-book-style quoting with good/better/best options. Pick this over Jobber if you want the fastest setup and less configuration. **3. ServiceTitan** - The enterprise answer. Genuinely better estimate-to-work-order flow, reporting, and membership/price-book management, but it's expensive and a real implementation project. Only worth it above ~20-25 techs or multi-location. ## If you estimate from plans and drawings (GC, remodeler, specialty sub) **4. Buildxact** - Best starting point for residential builders and remodelers. On-screen takeoff plus estimating plus basic job management, with a supplier-price-list workflow that saves a lot of manual entry. Around $169/mo on annual billing. **5. STACK** - The one I'd name for commercial takeoff and bidding. Cloud-based, good AI autocount, easy to collaborate with multiple estimators. Noticeably pricier (list is around $249/user/mo) but it's the strongest pure takeoff tool most trades can realistically buy. **6. Clear Estimates** - The budget pick for small remodelers. Pre-built database of 10,000+ line items and templates means you can produce a credible estimate on day one without building a cost library from scratch. **7. HCSS HeavyBid** - Only relevant if you're heavy civil / DOT bid items. In that niche it's the standard and nothing else really competes. **8. PlanSwift** - Still fast and well-liked for desktop point-and-click takeoff in specialty trades, but it's legacy Windows-only software at roughly $2,000/user/year. I'd only choose it if someone on your team already knows it. A note on pricing: vendor list prices change often and most of these negotiate, so treat the numbers above as ballpark and confirm on the vendor's own site. My practical advice is to shortlist two, run a real past job through each during the trial, and pick the one whose estimate output you'd be comfortable handing to a customer. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
