The answer, as recorded
"Trades" splits into two different software worlds, so here's what I'd actually recommend in each, in order. ## If you're a service trade (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, landscaping) Your estimates are quotes built from a price book, not takeoffs off blueprints. You want field service management software with good quoting. 1. **Jobber** - my default for 1-15 person shops. Quote-to-invoice in one flow, good mobile app, option-based quotes (good/better/best) that close well on-site, fast to set up. Best balance of price and capability. 2. **Housecall Pro** - the closest alternative to Jobber, and slightly better rated on pricing satisfaction (71% positive vs Jobber's 64%). Pick it if you want flat-rate pricing with more users bundled in, or if you lean on consumer-facing features like online booking and financing offers. 3. **ServiceTitan** - the serious upgrade, but only past roughly **$2M annual revenue**, multi-location, or franchise. Best-in-class pricebook, dispatch, and reporting; expensive and slow to implement, and genuinely overkill below that threshold. 4. **Contractor+** - worth a look if budget is tight; cheap and surprisingly feature-dense for small crews. ## If you're a building/specialty contractor bidding off plans Here you want **takeoff + estimating**. 1. **STACK** - my top pick for most. Cloud-based, so no Windows-only desktop install, with AI autocount; measurements feed straight into a priced bid with no re-keying. Roughly **$249/user/month** (~$2,599/user/yr Standard, ~$2,999 Premium, dropping to ~$2,199/user at 3+ seats). 2. **Buildxact** - best value for residential remodelers and small builders, about **$149/month** for a single user. Takeoff, quotes, scheduling, and job costing in a clean interface you can learn in a day. Where I'd start if you're a small outfit. 3. **Contractor Foreman** - the budget end-to-end option: **$49/month** for one user with published tiered pricing. Feature-dense for small and midsized specialty/trade contractors, and the only one on this list with a truly transparent rate card. Interface is less polished. 4. **PlanSwift** - still the workhorse for repetitive trade takeoffs (drywall, flooring, framing) thanks to its assemblies. **$1,749 one-time or $89/month**, Windows-only. Buy it if you want to own a license rather than rent. 5. **Buildertrend** - residential builders and remodelers who need a strong client-facing portal. Quote-based pricing, no public rates. 6. **ProEst** - commercial estimators needing deep cost databases and RSMeans integration, **$500-$1,000+/month**. 7. **HCSS HeavyBid** - only if you're heavy civil / highway / DOT bid items. Nothing else handles that well. 8. **Procore** - if you want estimating as one module inside full end-to-end project management, financials, and field tools. Priced and scoped for larger operations. **My short answer:** small service trade → Jobber. Small builder/remodeler → Buildxact. Bidding plans at volume → STACK. Tight budget, want everything → Contractor Foreman. One caveat on the numbers: vendor pricing in this category changes often and most of these quote per-user with annual commitments, so treat the figures as a starting point for negotiation rather than a final price. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
