The answer, as recorded
"Best" splits hard along two lines: **service trades** (you quote jobs at the kitchen table, then dispatch techs) vs. **construction/remodel trades** (you take off plans and build a line-item bid). Here's what I'd actually name, in order: ## If you're a service trade (plumbing, HVAC, electrical, roofing) 1. **Jobber** - My default for 1-10 person shops. Cleanest estimate builder of the bunch, genuinely usable from a phone in the driveway, and the quote→job→invoice→payment chain just works. ~$39/mo solo up to ~$599/mo for 15 users. Start here unless you have a specific reason not to. 2. **Housecall Pro** - Pick this over Jobber if you sell options. Its good/better/best proposal tool and automated follow-up on open estimates are better than Jobber's, and that's real money on replacement work (HVAC changeouts, panel upgrades, repipes). From ~$79/mo. 3. **ServiceTitan** - Only once you're past ~10 techs and $3M+. Enormously capable, enormously expensive and heavy. Below that size it's a tax, not a tool. 4. **Simpro** - Worth a look if you do a mix of service calls *and* project work with real materials procurement; it handles that hybrid better than Jobber/HCP. ## If you're a residential builder or remodeler 1. **Buildxact** - Best single pick here. Digital takeoff off PDF plans, assemblies, supplier price lists, and job tracking in one place, unlimited users. ~$169-199/mo for Foundation, ~$339-399 for Pro with scheduling. 2. **Clear Estimates** - Cheaper and narrower: a cost database plus templates that spits out a professional proposal fast. ~$59-79/mo. Great for remodel/repair where you don't need takeoff. No per-user fees. 3. **Contractor Foreman** - Best value if you want estimating bundled into full project management. ~$49/mo for the whole company and consistently 4.5/5 across hundreds of G2/Capterra reviews. Jack-of-all-trades; estimating is good, not best-in-class. ## If you're a commercial or specialty sub 1. **STACK** - Best cloud takeoff + estimating for most commercial subs. Browser-based, good collaboration, works across trades. 2. **PlanSwift** - If you're takeoff-heavy and want a desktop tool with a one-time purchase instead of a subscription. 3. **Trade-specific heavyweights** - **Accubid** for commercial/industrial electrical, **Trimble AutoBid** or **FastEST** for mechanical/plumbing/HVAC, **B2W Estimate** or **HeavyBid** for civil/heavy highway, **Sage Estimating** for commercial GCs. These win on built-in trade databases and assemblies that generic tools can't match - if you're bidding large electrical or mechanical, the specialist pays for itself. **My honest shortcut:** service trade → trial Jobber and Housecall Pro side by side for two weeks. Remodeler → Buildxact. Commercial sub → STACK unless your trade has a named specialist above, in which case use the specialist. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
