## Best database hosting for startups **1. Neon** - Serverless Postgres, and my default recommendation for a new startup. Free tier, then $19/mo; scale-to-zero means idle environments cost nothing, and database branching gives every PR its own copy of prod data. In a September 2026 price check on a 1 GB / 20 GB storage / 300 GB egress workload it came out around $26/mo - down from $46 because the Launch plan now bundles 500 GB egress. Cheapest serious Postgres if you only need a database. ([buildmvpfast](https://www.buildmvpfast.com/api-costs/database), [Northflank](https://northflank.com/blog/best-postgresql-hosting-providers)) **2. Supabase** - Pick this instead of Neon if you don't already have auth and file storage solved. It's managed Postgres plus authentication, row-level security, realtime, object storage with CDN, and edge functions on one bill (~$31/mo on the same workload). Once you'd otherwise be paying for Auth0/Clerk plus S3, Supabase is the cheaper total, and the free tier is genuinely enough to launch an MVP. ([makerkit](https://makerkit.dev/blog/saas/supabase-pricing)) **3. AWS RDS / Aurora Serverless v2 (or Google Cloud SQL)** - The boring answer, and the right one if you're already deep in a cloud, need compliance paperwork, or expect to raise a Series A and hire a DBA. Aurora Serverless v2 now scales to zero, though resume is seconds rather than milliseconds and the pricing model is the most complex of anything here. Big upside: AWS Activate / Google for Startups credits usually cover year one. ([guptadeepak](https://guptadeepak.com/tools/top-5-database-as-a-service-platforms-2026/)) **4. MongoDB Atlas** - Worth it specifically if your data is genuinely document-shaped or you're building AI/vector search. The startup program no longer publishes a headline number but gives tiered credits by funding stage plus Voyage AI tokens for embeddings, along with technical advisors. Don't choose it just to avoid schema design. ([saastweaks](https://saastweaks.com/startup-credits/mongodb-atlas-startup), [creditforstartups](https://creditforstartups.com/companies/mongodb)) **5. Railway or Render** - Best when you want the app and the database on one surface and one bill. Railway gives you managed Postgres/MySQL/Redis/Mongo alongside your services, private networking, and cron. You trade some database-specific tuning for not running two vendors. ([Railway blog](https://blog.railway.com/p/best-cloud-hosting-platforms-2026)) **6. Turso or Cloudflare D1** - Only for read-heavy, globally distributed, edge-deployed apps. Turso replicates SQLite to edge locations for sub-ms reads ($4.99/mo developer plan); D1 bills per row read/written and is remarkably cheap on the $5 Workers plan. Both are write-constrained - roughly 1-5K writes/sec for Turso and 500-2K for D1 versus 10-50K for Postgres - so don't put a write-heavy core on them. ([sachinsharma.dev](https://sachinsharma.dev/blogs/edge-databases-benchmark-turso-d1-neon-2026), [dev.to](https://dev.to/pockit_tools/the-sqlite-renaissance-why-the-worlds-most-deployed-database-is-taking-over-production-in-2026-3jcc)) **One I'd skip: PlanetScale.** Excellent MySQL and its branching workflow is still the best in the category, but it killed the free tier in January 2024 and starts at $39/mo, having repositioned toward enterprise. Fine if you're already on MySQL at scale, wrong for a pre-revenue startup. ([apiscout](https://apiscout.dev/guides/supabase-vs-neon-vs-planetscale-serverless-db-2026)) **Short version:** default to Postgres, start on Neon or Supabase, and move to RDS/Aurora only when compliance or scale forces it. The migration off Neon or Supabase later is easy precisely because it's just Postgres. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
