The question asked, verbatim: best database hosting services for startups

Brands named, in the order the engine gave

  1. Supabase recommended
Supabase - My default suggestion for most startups.
  2. Postgres recommended
Managed Postgres plus auth, file storage, realtime subscriptions, and edge functions in one product, so you skip wiring up three or four separate services.
  3. Neon recommended
Neon - The one I'd pick if you want plain Postgres and nothing else.
  4. PlanetScale recommended
PlanetScale - Worth it specifically if you're on MySQL (or want their Postgres offering) and expect to need serious horizontal scale - their Vitess heritage is the real differentiator.
  5. AWS recommended
AWS RDS / Aurora, or Google Cloud SQL - Boring and correct if you're already on that cloud, or if you have hard requirements the startup-y providers don't meet: provider-native IAM, VPC networking, broad region coverage, compliance paperwork.
  6. AWS RDS recommended
AWS RDS / Aurora, or Google Cloud SQL - Boring and correct if you're already on that cloud, or if you have hard requirements the startup-y providers don't meet: provider-native IAM, VPC networking, broad region coverage, compliance paperwork.
  7. AWS RDS / Aurora recommended
AWS RDS / Aurora, or Google Cloud SQL - Boring and correct if you're already on that cloud, or if you have hard requirements the startup-y providers don't meet: provider-native IAM, VPC networking, broad region coverage, compliance paperwork.
  8. Google recommended
AWS RDS / Aurora, or Google Cloud SQL - Boring and correct if you're already on that cloud, or if you have hard requirements the startup-y providers don't meet: provider-native IAM, VPC networking, broad region coverage, compliance paperwork.
  9. DigitalOcean Managed Databases recommended
DigitalOcean Managed Databases - The value pick.
  10. MongoDB Atlas recommended
MongoDB Atlas - Only if your data is genuinely document-shaped.
  11. GCP mentioned
If you're already deep in AWS or GCP, don't fight it - use RDS or Cloud SQL.

The answer, as recorded

Here's what I'd actually recommend, roughly in the order I'd reach for them: **1. Supabase** - My default suggestion for most startups. Managed Postgres plus auth, file storage, realtime subscriptions, and edge functions in one product, so you skip wiring up three or four separate services. Free tier is 500 MB / 50K monthly active users forever; Pro is $25/mo. The caveat worth knowing: that $25 covers auth + storage + realtime too, so comparing it head-to-head against database-only pricing understates the value. **2. Neon** - The one I'd pick if you want plain Postgres and nothing else. Two things make it genuinely good for early-stage: scale-to-zero (you don't pay for an idle dev database) and database branching, so every pull request can get its own throwaway copy of prod data. After the Databricks acquisition they cut storage pricing ~80% (to ~$0.35/GB-mo) and compute 15-25%. Launch plan is ~$19/mo with 10 GB storage and 500 GB egress. **3. PlanetScale** - Worth it specifically if you're on MySQL (or want their Postgres offering) and expect to need serious horizontal scale - their Vitess heritage is the real differentiator. Two caveats: they killed the free tier in January 2024, so there's no $0 on-ramp, and the bill covers the database only. **4. AWS RDS / Aurora, or Google Cloud SQL** - Boring and correct if you're already on that cloud, or if you have hard requirements the startup-y providers don't meet: provider-native IAM, VPC networking, broad region coverage, compliance paperwork. More expensive and more ops work, but nobody gets fired for choosing it. Cloud SQL in particular handles failover, replication, and patching hands-off. **5. DigitalOcean Managed Databases** - The value pick. Predictable flat pricing (no surprise egress bills), good docs, simple dashboard. Less feature-rich than the above, but if you just want a reliable Postgres or MySQL instance at a price you can forecast, it's hard to beat. **6. MongoDB Atlas** - Only if your data is genuinely document-shaped. Don't pick it to avoid writing schemas; most startups that do regret it. But for real document workloads, Atlas is the mature managed option. Rough call: if you're greenfield and want to move fast, Supabase. If you want just a database and love Postgres tooling, Neon. If you're already deep in AWS or GCP, don't fight it - use RDS or Cloud SQL. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
