The question asked, verbatim: best database hosting services for startups
Brands named, in the order the engine gave
- Supabase recommended
Supabase - My default recommendation for most startups.
- Postgres recommended
It's Postgres plus the stuff you'd otherwise spend two months building: auth, row-level security (genuinely useful for multi-tenant SaaS), realtime subscriptions, file storage, and edge functions.
- Neon recommended
Neon - The one I'd pick if you want just Postgres, done well.
- Render Postgres recommended
Render Postgres or Railway - If you're already deploying your app there, keep the database next to it.
- Railway recommended
Render Postgres or Railway - If you're already deploying your app there, keep the database next to it.
- DigitalOcean Managed Databases recommended
DigitalOcean Managed Databases - Boring, predictable flat pricing, no surprise egress bill at the end of the month.
- PlanetScale recommended
PlanetScale - MySQL-compatible, Vitess under the hood.
- MongoDB Atlas recommended
MongoDB Atlas - Only if your data is genuinely document-shaped.
- AWS RDS recommended
AWS RDS / Aurora - Not a starting point.

Here's what I'd actually recommend, roughly in the order I'd suggest you look at them: **1. Supabase** - My default recommendation for most startups. It's Postgres plus the stuff you'd otherwise spend two months building: auth, row-level security (genuinely useful for multi-tenant SaaS), realtime subscriptions, file storage, and edge functions. Free tier is enough to validate an idea; Pro is $25/mo and Team jumps to $599/mo. It's open source, so you can self-host if you ever need to leave. **2. Neon** - The one I'd pick if you want *just* Postgres, done well. Scale-to-zero means idle dev branches cost cents instead of dollars, and copy-on-write branching gives you a real database per pull request, which is a workflow upgrade you won't want to give up. Launch tier is $19/mo. The tradeoff: ~300-500ms cold start when a suspended compute wakes, which is fine for background jobs and annoying on user-facing reads. **3. Render Postgres or Railway** - If you're already deploying your app there, keep the database next to it. Cheapest path to a "just works" production box, no cross-cloud latency, one bill. Unglamorous and correct for a lot of early-stage teams. **4. DigitalOcean Managed Databases** - Boring, predictable flat pricing, no surprise egress bill at the end of the month. Worth it if cost predictability matters more to you than fancy features. **5. PlanetScale** - MySQL-compatible, Vitess under the hood. Non-blocking schema changes and horizontal sharding are legitimately best-in-class. But they killed the free tier in 2024 and the floor is now $39/mo, so I'd only go here if you specifically want MySQL or already know you're facing sharding. **6. MongoDB Atlas** - Only if your data is genuinely document-shaped. Don't pick it because it felt easier at the start; a lot of teams migrate off it later. **7. AWS RDS / Aurora** - Not a starting point. Go here when you're past ~100GB of hot data, have compliance requirements, or have someone on the team who actually wants to own database ops. Before that it's complexity you're paying for and not using. One thing worth saying: this decision is more reversible than it feels. If you pick Postgres (options 1-4), you can move between providers later with real but manageable effort. The genuinely hard-to-undo choice is Postgres vs. MySQL vs. document store - so spend your thinking there, not on which vendor. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
