The answer, as recorded
"CMS for a startup" splits into two different jobs, so here's how I'd pick for each. ## If it's your marketing site / blog (most startups, most of the time) 1. **Webflow** - my default for a B2B startup marketing site. Visual builder with a real CMS underneath, so marketing ships landing pages and blog posts without engineering, and it handles localization and structured data/SEO well. Pay for it in hosting+seats rather than dev time. 2. **Framer** - pick this over Webflow if design polish and speed-to-live matter more than content volume. Free to start, fastest path to a good-looking site; its CMS is lighter, so it strains if you're publishing a lot. 3. **Ghost** - the best choice if your startup's growth motion *is* content: blog, newsletter, and paid subscriptions in one tool, open-source and self-hostable. Much less fiddly than WordPress for pure publishing. 4. **WordPress** - still powers ~43% of the web, and the plugin ecosystem has no equal, so it's the pragmatic answer when you need some specific integration or you're hiring cheap, widely-available help. Cost is ongoing maintenance: plugin sprawl and security patching. ## If content feeds a product or multiple front-ends (headless) 1. **Sanity** - my first recommendation for a dev team. Schema-as-code in TypeScript, genuinely good editor UI for non-technical teammates, generous free tier (~20 seats) before ~$15/seat/month. Currently the top-rated headless CMS on G2. 2. **Payload** - best if you're TypeScript/Next.js-first and want to own everything. Free and open-source, runs inside your Node app, optional cloud at ~$35/month. Best modern DX of the self-hosted options. 3. **Strapi** - the budget MVP pick: free self-hosted, biggest plugin ecosystem and community, cloud from ~$18/month. You own the infra and the upgrade pain. 4. **Storyblok** - worth it specifically when a marketing team needs visual drag-and-drop editing of a headless site without waiting on engineers. Free starter tier. 5. **Contentful** - only once you're scaling or internationalizing hard and someone else is paying. Battle-tested and enterprise-ready, but pricing jumps to roughly $300/month at the first real tier. **Practical note:** self-hosting rarely pays off below roughly $400-600/month of equivalent SaaS spend - the ops overhead eats the savings. So early on, take the hosted free tier (Sanity, Framer, Storyblok) and revisit later. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
