Here's what I'd actually recommend, split by what you're building - "CMS for a startup" usually means one of two different things. ## If you need a marketing site (landing pages + blog) fast **1. Framer** - My default for a pre-Series-A marketing site. Free to start, Basic is ~$10/mo annual, and a 20-page site with a blog lands around $15-50/mo. Designers can ship it without engineering, and the built-in CMS is enough for a blog and careers page. The tradeoff: CMS depth is shallow, so if your content model gets relational you'll outgrow it. **2. Webflow** - The step up when Framer's CMS isn't enough. As of May 2026 the old CMS and Business tiers merged into one Premium plan at $25/mo annual ($39 monthly), with Basic at $15/mo. Richer content modeling, better SEO controls, huge template/agency ecosystem. Pick this over Framer if content *is* the product (programmatic SEO, large resource libraries, multi-locale). **3. WordPress** - Still 43% of the web and 60% of CMS-using sites. Worth it specifically if you're doing heavy SEO/content marketing and want the plugin ecosystem, or you're hiring cheap contract help. Real cost is $20-300/mo once you add hosting, themes, and maintenance - plus plugin sprawl and security upkeep you now own. ## If you need a CMS behind your product (headless) **4. Sanity** - Where I'd start for a developer-led team. Generous free tier (20 seats), schema-as-code in TypeScript, strong AI/content-workflow support, and it's still #1 on G2 for headless in 2026. Usage-based pricing is the thing to model early - it's $300+ at real scale. **5. Payload** - Best pick if you're TypeScript-first and want the CMS to live in your Next.js repo. $0 self-hosted, cloud from ~$35. Best developer experience of the group; smaller ecosystem than Strapi. **6. Strapi** - The budget MVP answer. Open source, free self-hosted with unlimited API calls, largest plugin community, and Strapi Cloud from ~$9/mo per seat. You own the infra and the upgrade pain. **7. Storyblok** - Choose this when the *marketing team* is the real user. Visual drag-and-drop editing on top of a headless backend, free starter tier. It's the compromise when engineers want headless but marketers refuse to file tickets. **8. Contentful** - Only if you're planning aggressive internationalization or already have enterprise buyers asking. Mature, huge ecosystem, but the free tier (10 users, 100k API calls, 10k records) jumps straight to $300/mo on Lite, which is a rough cliff for a growing startup. **My one-line take:** Framer for the marketing site, Sanity or Payload for the product. Skip Contentful unless someone's compliance team is making you.
