The question asked, verbatim: best content management systems for startups

Brands named, in the order the engine gave

  1. Webflow recommended
Webflow - If the CMS is for your marketing site (which it usually is for a startup), start here.
  2. Sanity recommended
Sanity - My default pick if you need content inside your actual product, not just a blog.
  3. Payload recommended
Payload - The one I'd choose for a TypeScript/Next.js team that wants to self-host and own the whole thing.
  4. Next.js recommended
Payload - The one I'd choose for a TypeScript/Next.js team that wants to self-host and own the whole thing.
  5. Strapi recommended
Strapi - The safe open-source choice when you want the biggest community and plugin ecosystem, or when you need to self-host for data-residency/compliance reasons.
  6. Storyblok recommended
Storyblok - Pick this specifically when non-technical marketers are the primary users and you want them fully unblocked.
  7. WordPress recommended
WordPress - Not fashionable, but still correct if you want a blog live this afternoon, your content is mostly articles, and nobody on the team wants to maintain a build pipeline.
  8. Prismic recommended
Prismic - Worth a look for a pure early-stage marketing site.
  9. Adobe Experience Manager mentioned
And skip Adobe Experience Manager, Drupal, and Joomla entirely at startup stage - AEM is enterprise-priced, and the other two cost you more in developer time than they save.
  10. Drupal mentioned
And skip Adobe Experience Manager, Drupal, and Joomla entirely at startup stage - AEM is enterprise-priced, and the other two cost you more in developer time than they save.

The answer, as recorded

Here's what I'd actually recommend, roughly in the order I'd suggest you consider them: **1. Webflow** - If the CMS is for your marketing site (which it usually is for a startup), start here. Visual builder plus a real structured CMS, so marketing can ship landing pages and blog posts without pulling an engineer off product. The main tradeoff is that you're locked into their hosting and it gets pricey as you add editor seats. **2. Sanity** - My default pick if you need content inside your actual product, not just a blog. Schemas are defined in TypeScript code, so your content model lives in your repo and goes through code review. The free tier is genuinely usable (20 seats, no credit card), and it's the best of the bunch for feeding content into AI workflows. **3. Payload** - The one I'd choose for a TypeScript/Next.js team that wants to self-host and own the whole thing. Open source, no license cost, and it runs as part of your Next app rather than as a separate service. Newer and smaller ecosystem than the others, so expect to write more yourself. **4. Strapi** - The safe open-source choice when you want the biggest community and plugin ecosystem, or when you need to self-host for data-residency/compliance reasons. Less elegant than Payload but far more battle-tested, and easier to hire for. **5. Storyblok** - Pick this specifically when non-technical marketers are the primary users and you want them fully unblocked. The visual editor for headless content is the best in the category. Free starter tier. **6. WordPress** - Not fashionable, but still correct if you want a blog live this afternoon, your content is mostly articles, and nobody on the team wants to maintain a build pipeline. Enormous plugin ecosystem, cheap hosting, trivially easy to hire for. The cost is ongoing security patching and plugin sprawl. **7. Prismic** - Worth a look for a pure early-stage marketing site. Fastest setup of the managed options, free to start, zero DevOps. **Who I'd skip:** Contentful, unless you're already planning serious multi-language internationalization - it's mature and has a big ecosystem, but pricing jumps hard (~$300/month at the Lite tier) right when a startup can least absorb it. And skip Adobe Experience Manager, Drupal, and Joomla entirely at startup stage - AEM is enterprise-priced, and the other two cost you more in developer time than they save. **Short version:** marketing site → Webflow; content in the product → Sanity; want to self-host → Payload. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
