The answer, as recorded
"Compliance automation" usually means one of two very different things, so here's both - security/audit compliance first, since that's what the term almost always refers to. ## If you need SOC 2 / ISO 27001 (selling to enterprise customers) **1. Vanta** - my default recommendation for most small businesses. Largest integration library, fastest path to a first SOC 2, and the auditor ecosystem knows it, so audits go smoothly. The catch is price: roughly $10K-$80K+/year depending on size and add-ons, with four tiers (Core, Plus, Growth, Scale). For a 10-30 person company expect the low end. **2. Sprinto** - the best value if budget is the binding constraint. Starts around $7K-$8K/year, roughly 20-40% cheaper than Vanta or Drata for equivalent functionality. Genuinely built for startups rather than scaled down from enterprise. **3. ComplyJet** - the cheapest credible option I found: $5,000/year for one framework, $8,000 for two, and flat pricing up to 50 employees regardless of headcount. Smaller company and thinner ecosystem, but if you just need one SOC 2 report to unblock a deal, it does that. **4. Drata** - pick this if you expect to grow into mid-market fast. Entry around $7,500/year but most land at $15K-$25K, plus $5K-$20K implementation in year one and ~$1,500/year per extra framework. Stronger than Vanta at scale, worse value at 10 people. **5. Scytale** - choose this if you have no in-house security person. It assigns a dedicated GRC expert to your account, the most hands-on option in the category. Build tier starts ~$7,500/year, but all-in year one for a 50-person SaaS runs $30K-$55K including audit. **6. Secureframe** - worth a look if you need many frameworks at once (HIPAA + SOC 2 + GDPR + PCI). Broadest framework coverage of the group. Skip **OneTrust** and **LogicGate** - real products, but enterprise GRC priced and scoped for companies with a compliance department. ## If you mean HR/employment compliance **Gusto** - if you don't already have payroll, this is the answer. 50-state compliance monitoring, handbook tools, labor-law and minimum-wage alerts, e-signature onboarding, and document storage with audit trails, bundled into payroll you need anyway. **Mineral** (formerly ThinkHR) - add this if you want live human HR advisors alongside auto-updating policy templates. Often already included free through your PEO or insurance broker, so check before buying. **ComplianceHR** - backed by law firm Littler Mendelson, HIPAA-compliant, produces audit-ready risk reports. Overkill unless you're in a litigation-prone state or industry. **One practical note:** these platforms automate evidence collection, not the audit. Your SOC 2 report still requires paying a separate CPA firm $8K-$20K. Budget for both, and get the software quote and auditor quote before committing to either - several vendors bundle the audit at a worse rate than you'd negotiate alone.
