The answer, as recorded
"Compliance automation software" usually means one of two very different things, so here are both, with the security/certification one first since that's what the phrase normally refers to. ## If you need SOC 2 / ISO 27001 / HIPAA (security compliance) **1. Vanta** - my default recommendation. The most mature product, deepest integration library, and the largest auditor network, which matters because your auditor accepting the evidence export is the whole point. Expect roughly $10-12K/year for a small company's first SOC 2. Best if you want the safest, least-surprising path. **2. Sprinto** - the best value pick, and what I'd name if budget is the binding constraint. Roughly $5-10K/year for small teams, generally 20-40% under Vanta/Drata for equivalent scope, with guided onboarding built for lean cloud-native teams. Integration depth is thinner, so it fits better if your stack is mostly standard (AWS/GCP, Google Workspace, GitHub) than if it's unusual. **3. Secureframe** - pick this if nobody on your team has done compliance before. It leans hardest on templates, clear onboarding, and a human advisor you can call, which is worth real money when you don't know what a control is. Around $8-12K/year. **4. Drata** - strong automation and evidence collection, but it's priced and built for mid-market and up ($10-15K/year starting, scaling to $100K+). Choose it if you expect to add several frameworks and headcount fast; otherwise you're paying for scale you won't use this year. **5. Thoropass** - worth a look specifically because it bundles the audit itself with the software. One vendor instead of platform-plus-separate-auditor is genuinely simpler for a first-time small company, at the cost of flexibility in choosing your auditor. Honest caveat: all of these are quote-based, all will quote you higher than list, and all of them are a poor fit if you don't actually have a customer or deal requiring the certification. If no one is asking for your SOC 2 report, this spend is premature. ## If you meant HR / employment / labor law compliance **1. Gusto** - the one I'd name first for a US small business. Full-service payroll with tax filings in all 50 states, I-9 and W-4 e-signature workflows, state labor law posters, and handbook tools. Transparent pricing, which the security vendors above notably lack. **2. Rippling** - better if you're growing fast, hiring internationally, or want HR, IT, and device management in one system. More capable and more expensive; overkill for a stable ten-person shop. **3. OnPay** - the cheap, boring, correct choice if you only need payroll done compliantly and don't want a platform. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
