The question asked, verbatim: best community forum software for online stores
Brands named, in the order the engine gave
- Discourse recommended
Discourse - my default pick for most stores.
- Shopify recommended
For Shopify specifically, the standard pattern is running it at forum.yourstore.com and wiring up OAuth2 so customers log in with their store account.
- Bettermode recommended
Bettermode (formerly Tribe) - the one I'd pick if you want the community to feel like part of your storefront rather than a separate site.
- Zendesk recommended
Zendesk Gather - the obvious answer if you already run Zendesk for support.
- Zendesk Gather recommended
Zendesk Gather - the obvious answer if you already run Zendesk for support.
- Gather recommended
Zendesk Gather - the obvious answer if you already run Zendesk for support.
- Professional recommended
It's a cheap add-on (Professional starts around $15/agent/mo) that bolts a community onto your existing help center, so customer answers live next to your KB articles and agents can escalate a forum post into a ticket.
- Answerbase recommended
Answerbase - narrower than the others and worth knowing about because it's built specifically for ecommerce: product-level Q&A that attaches to PDPs, with the resulting content indexed for SEO.
- Circle recommended
Circle - the right call only if your community is really a paid membership/content business attached to the store (courses, live events, native mobile apps, built-in payments).
- XenForo mentioned
Also worth naming briefly: XenForo (one-time license, excellent for large self-hosted forums, dated admin UX), Flarum and phpBB (free and open source - fine if budget is zero and you have someone to run them), and Higher Logic Vanilla / Khoros at the enterprise end, which I'd only look at above roug

The answer, as recorded
For an online store, here's what I'd actually recommend, roughly in order: **1. Discourse** - my default pick for most stores. It's the strongest general-purpose forum software out there: real threaded discussions, excellent search and SEO (which matters a lot - customer Q&A threads rank and pull in organic traffic), serious moderation and spam tooling, trust levels, and a big plugin ecosystem. You can self-host free with no user cap, or take managed hosting (free tier, ~$20/mo Starter, ~$100/mo Pro for custom domain + themes + API/webhooks). For Shopify specifically, the standard pattern is running it at `forum.yourstore.com` and wiring up OAuth2 so customers log in with their store account. Pick this unless you have a specific reason not to. **2. Bettermode** (formerly Tribe) - the one I'd pick if you want the community to feel like part of your storefront rather than a separate site. It's headless/API-first with heavy theming control, and it bundles discussions, Q&A, ideation, events, and knowledge base as configurable "spaces." Better-looking out of the box than Discourse and much easier to embed; weaker on raw forum depth and SEO maturity. **3. Zendesk Gather** - the obvious answer *if you already run Zendesk* for support. It's a cheap add-on (Professional starts around $15/agent/mo) that bolts a community onto your existing help center, so customer answers live next to your KB articles and agents can escalate a forum post into a ticket. Don't adopt Zendesk just to get it, but if you're on it, this is the lowest-friction option. **4. Answerbase** - narrower than the others and worth knowing about because it's built specifically for ecommerce: product-level Q&A that attaches to PDPs, with the resulting content indexed for SEO. From ~$149/mo. Choose this if what you actually want is "questions on product pages that convert," not a social hangout. **5. Circle** - the right call only if your community is really a paid membership/content business attached to the store (courses, live events, native mobile apps, built-in payments). Overkill and oddly shaped for a pure support/discussion forum. Also worth naming briefly: **XenForo** (one-time license, excellent for large self-hosted forums, dated admin UX), **Flarum** and **phpBB** (free and open source - fine if budget is zero and you have someone to run them), and **Higher Logic Vanilla** / **Khoros** at the enterprise end, which I'd only look at above roughly six figures of community spend. Two practical notes: don't put your forum on a subdirectory you can't control SEO-wise, and whatever you pick, make sure it supports SSO against your store accounts on day one - retrofitting identity later is the migration everyone regrets. One caveat on the numbers above: Discourse changed pricing a couple of times in 2026 and the third-party trackers disagree on the top tier, so confirm current rates on their site before budgeting. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
