The question asked, verbatim: best community forum software for online stores
Brands named, in the order the engine gave
- Discourse recommended
Discourse - the default answer for most stores.
- Google recommended
It's discussion-first with excellent search, moderation, trust levels, and a strong plugin/API ecosystem - which matters because the forum content is what shows up in Google and pulls in long-tail traffic for your product category.
- Bettermode recommended
Bettermode (formerly Tribe) - if you want it to look like part of your store.
- Circle recommended
Circle - if your community is really a membership.
- XenForo recommended
XenForo - if you want to own it outright.
- Flarum recommended
Flarum or phpBB - if budget is zero.
- Shopify recommended
Shopify-native apps - if you want it live this week.
- Forumial SSO recommended
Social Place (https://apps.shopify.com/social-place) (categories, polls, badges, unlimited members) or Forumial SSO (https://apps.shopify.com/forumial-sso) (customers log in with their existing Shopify accounts).
- Answerbase recommended
Answerbase - if the real need is product Q&A, not a forum.

The answer, as recorded
Here's what I'd actually recommend, in order: **1. Discourse - the default answer for most stores.** Open-source, free if you self-host (no member cap), or hosted from ~$20/mo Starter and $100/mo Pro. It's discussion-first with excellent search, moderation, trust levels, and a strong plugin/API ecosystem - which matters because the forum content is what shows up in Google and pulls in long-tail traffic for your product category. You can wire it to your store's customer accounts via DiscourseConnect SSO. Run it at `community.yourstore.com`. Caveat: self-hosting means you own the upgrades and email deliverability. **2. Bettermode (formerly Tribe) - if you want it to look like part of your store.** Headless/API-first, so you can embed community spaces directly in your storefront and split them by purpose (product Q&A, feedback board, general discussion). It's the most "on-brand" option. It's also by far the most expensive - roughly $399-$1,800/mo - so it only makes sense at real scale or if design control is the whole point. **3. Circle - if your community is really a membership.** ~$89-$399/mo. Best if you're selling subscriptions, courses, or a VIP tier alongside products (think supplements, fitness gear, hobby kits). Weaker than Discourse as a searchable public forum; it's built for gated, member-facing spaces. **4. XenForo - if you want to own it outright.** $195 one-time self-hosted license (cloud $60-$250/mo). Mature, fast, battle-tested on very large forums, strong anti-spam. Good choice for enthusiast niches (auto parts, audio, firearms, watches) where customers expect a classic forum. **5. Flarum or phpBB - if budget is zero.** Both fully free and open source. Flarum is the modern, lightweight one; phpBB is the ancient, rock-solid one. You'll do more integration work yourself and plugins are thinner. **6. Shopify-native apps - if you want it live this week.** [Social Place](https://apps.shopify.com/social-place) (categories, polls, badges, unlimited members) or [Forumial SSO](https://apps.shopify.com/forumial-sso) (customers log in with their existing Shopify accounts). Far less powerful than the above, but zero infrastructure and no separate login. **7. Answerbase - if the real need is product Q&A, not a forum.** From ~$149/mo, purpose-built for ecommerce: customer questions attached to product pages, which lifts conversion and adds indexable content. Narrower than a community, but often the higher-ROI version of this idea. My honest take: start with Discourse + SSO to your store accounts unless you have a specific reason not to - it's the best combination of cost, SEO value, and not getting locked in. And if your actual goal is fewer support tickets and better product pages rather than member-to-member conversation, do Answerbase or product Q&A first; a half-empty forum looks worse than no forum. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
