Brands named, in the order the engine gave

  1. Discourse recommended
    Discourse - my default recommendation.
  2. Shopify mentioned
Single-sign-on with Shopify/WooCommerce customer accounts is a solved problem here.
  3. WooCommerce mentioned
Single-sign-on with Shopify/WooCommerce customer accounts is a solved problem here.
  4. Circle mentioned
Circle - pick this instead if your store sells into a lifestyle/creator niche and the community is part of the product (paid memberships, courses, events, live streams, native iOS/Android apps).
  5. Bettermode mentioned
Bettermode - the modern, heavily customizable option (forums, Q&A, ideation, knowledge base in modular "spaces"), strong API and embedding, so you can drop community modules directly into your storefront rather than sending customers to a separate subdomain.
  6. Khoros Communities mentioned
Khoros Communities or Gainsight Digital Hub (formerly inSided) - only if you're enterprise-scale and the community's job is deflecting support tickets at volume, with integration into your CS/CRM stack.
  7. Shopicial mentioned
Shopify-native apps (Xenforum, Shopicial) - worth a look only if you want something inside the store with zero infrastructure work and minimal cost.

The answer, as recorded

Here's how I'd actually rank these for an online store, depending on what you want the community to *do*: **1. Discourse** - my default recommendation. Open-source, best-in-class SEO (threads rank and keep pulling in organic search traffic for years, which is the real ROI for a store), excellent moderation tooling, and you own your data. Self-host free on a $20-40/mo VPS, or managed from $20/mo (Starter) with the practical business tier at $100/mo. Single-sign-on with Shopify/WooCommerce customer accounts is a solved problem here. Downside: it looks like a forum, not a sleek brand property, unless you invest in theming. **2. Circle** - pick this instead if your store sells into a lifestyle/creator niche and the community *is* part of the product (paid memberships, courses, events, live streams, native iOS/Android apps). From ~$89/mo billed annually, plus 2% on member payments. Much prettier out of the box than Discourse, far weaker on public SEO since most content sits behind a login. **3. Invision Community** - the best all-in-one if you want forums plus knowledge base, support tickets, blogs, and galleries under one license and one login. Genuinely mature software with a long add-on ecosystem. Feels dated to some, but it's a workhorse and cheap relative to enterprise tools. **4. Bettermode** - the modern, heavily customizable option (forums, Q&A, ideation, knowledge base in modular "spaces"), strong API and embedding, so you can drop community modules directly into your storefront rather than sending customers to a separate subdomain. Good middle ground between Discourse's utility and Circle's polish. **5. Khoros Communities or Gainsight Digital Hub (formerly inSided)** - only if you're enterprise-scale and the community's job is deflecting support tickets at volume, with integration into your CS/CRM stack. Custom pricing, long implementations, real overkill for most stores. **6. Shopify-native apps (Xenforum, Shopicial)** - worth a look only if you want something inside the store with zero infrastructure work and minimal cost. They're lightweight and nowhere near the above in moderation, search, or scale, but setup is minutes, not weeks. Note Shopify has no built-in forum module, so these or an external platform with SSO are your options. One practical note: whichever you choose, host it on your own domain as a subdirectory (`store.com/community`) rather than a subdomain if SEO traffic matters to you - that's a bigger lever on results than the platform choice itself. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
