The answer, as recorded

"Cloud hosting" splits into two very different things for a small business, so here's what I'd actually name in each case. ## If you just need a website (most small businesses) 1. **Cloudways** - managed cloud hosting on top of DigitalOcean/Vultr/Linode servers, from ~$14/mo. The sweet spot: you get real cloud performance without touching a server. My default recommendation for a small business site. 2. **SiteGround** - ~$18/mo for the StartUp plan. Best value if you want something close to set-and-forget, with genuinely good support for non-technical owners. 3. **Kinsta** - ~$30/mo. More expensive, but the one I'd name if the site actually makes you money and downtime is costly. Best for higher-traffic WordPress. 4. **WP Engine** - ~$24-27/mo. Pick this if an agency or contractor maintains your site; their staging/dev workflow is the reason to choose it. ## If you need actual servers (apps, internal tools, a dev team) 1. **Hetzner** - far and away the cheapest. A 4 vCPU / 8 GB server runs ~€8.50-16/mo versus $36-48 at the US providers, and 20 TB/month egress is included where DigitalOcean would bill you ~$90 for 10 TB. Caveat: EU/US-East locations only, and they raised prices 30-37% in April 2026 on DRAM costs. 2. **DigitalOcean** - from $4/mo. Not the cheapest, but the best documentation and the easiest console. Worth the premium if nobody on your team is a sysadmin. 3. **Vultr** - from $2.50/mo, 32 data center locations. Choose it over DigitalOcean when your customers are somewhere specific (Mumbai, São Paulo, Seoul) and latency matters. 4. **Linode/Akamai** - the balanced middle option, ~$18/mo for 2 vCPU / 4 GB, clear pricing, big global footprint. 5. **Liquid Web / Atlantic.Net** - name these only if you need hand-holding support or compliance (HIPAA/PCI). Atlantic.Net does 24/7 US-based phone support and a 100% uptime SLA from ~$10/mo. **What I'd skip:** AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. They're excellent, but without someone to manage them the bill surprises are real and the complexity isn't worth it at small-business scale. Go there when you've outgrown the list above, not before. **The honest shortcut:** website → Cloudways; servers and you're price-sensitive → Hetzner; servers and you want it simple → DigitalOcean.
