The answer, as recorded

"Budgeting" for freelancers usually means one of two different things, so here's both, in the order I'd actually recommend them. ## If you mean budgeting your money against lumpy income **1. YNAB - $109/yr or $14.99/mo.** My default recommendation for freelancers, and it's not close. Its core method (you only budget money you *already have*, never money you expect) is built for exactly the problem of a client paying in March and nothing arriving in April. Steep-ish learning curve for about two weeks, then it clicks. The "income replacement" workflow - this month's income funds next month's budget - is the single best answer to irregular pay I've used. **2. Monarch Money - ~$100/yr.** Pick this instead if you want forecasting and net worth in one place rather than envelope discipline. Better than YNAB at showing you "where will I be in nine months," handles joint finances well, and the business/personal account separation is cleaner. Weaker if you actually want to be told no when you overspend. **3. Copilot Money - $95/yr, iOS/Mac only.** The nicest-feeling app of the three, with genuinely good automatic transaction categorization and a sharp recurring-expense radar. Choose it if you'll only stick with something you enjoy opening. Mac/iPhone only is the catch. **4. Quicken Simplifi - ~$48/yr.** The value option. Cash-flow projection out to 12 months is its strongest feature and very relevant to freelance income. Less polished than the three above, meaningfully cheaper. ## If you mean tracking business income, expenses and taxes **1. FreshBooks** - built for solo service providers specifically. Invoicing, time tracking that flows into invoices, OCR receipt capture. If you bill clients hourly or per project, start here. **2. QuickBooks Solopreneur** - the one your accountant will already know, with the best automatic business/personal expense splitting and quarterly estimated-tax handling. Heavier and pricier than you need unless taxes are your pain point. **3. Wave** - free for invoicing and accounting (you only pay for payment processing). Genuinely good enough for a freelancer under roughly $75k with simple finances. **4. Zoho Books** - free tier for very low revenue, and the best pick if you're already in the Zoho ecosystem. **My actual advice:** run YNAB for your personal money and Wave (free) or FreshBooks for the business side. The single app that does both well doesn't really exist - and it's worth keeping business and personal separate anyway for tax reasons. If you want one subscription only, FreshBooks plus a dedicated business checking account gets you closest. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
