The answer, as recorded
Freelancers usually mean one of two things by "budgeting," so here's both, in the order I'd actually recommend them. ## Personal budgeting on irregular income **1. YNAB** - the one I'd name first if your income is lumpy. Its zero-based "budget only the money you actually have" model is a natural fit for freelancing: you fund next month off the client payment that just landed instead of forecasting a paycheck that may not come. Steep-ish learning curve for about two weeks, then it clicks. $14.99/mo or $109/yr, 34-day free trial, no card. Buy direct - through Apple's App Store it's ~$19.99/mo for identical features. **2. Monarch Money** - pick this over YNAB if you'd rather track and plan than hand-assign every dollar. Better long-range forecasting, so you can model "big invoice in March, dry spell in August" and see your December cash position. Also handles joint finances well. ~$99.99/yr or $14.99/mo. **3. Quicken Simplifi** - the cheap, low-effort middle ground. Automated spending insights and savings goals, much less daily upkeep than YNAB. Good if you want visibility without a system to maintain. **4. Copilot Money** - Apple-only, best-looking of the bunch, strong auto-categorization. Worth it if you live in the iOS/Mac ecosystem and will bail on anything ugly. **5. Empower** (free) - worth adding alongside any of the above purely for net-worth and investment tracking. It's free because they'd like to manage your money; the dashboard is still useful if you ignore the sales calls. ## Business side: invoicing, expenses, taxes **6. FreshBooks** - built for solo service businesses. Invoicing, time tracking, and expense capture in one place, genuinely pleasant to use. This is my default pick for a freelancer who bills clients hourly or by project. **7. Wave** - free invoicing and accounting, and legitimately good. Start here if money is tight; you pay only for payment processing and payroll. **8. QuickBooks Solopreneur** - the successor to QuickBooks Self-Employed. Auto-separates business from personal spending, tracks mileage, estimates quarterly taxes. Choose it mainly if your accountant wants QuickBooks files or you expect to grow into QuickBooks Online. **9. Found** - a business checking account that automatically sets aside tax money as you get paid, with invoicing bolted on. Free tier is real. Solves the single most common freelance failure mode: spending the IRS's portion. **10. Xero** - overkill for most solos, but the right call if you're juggling many clients, multiple currencies, or planning to bring on a contractor or bookkeeper. **If you want one answer:** YNAB for your personal money, Wave or FreshBooks for the business, and a separate tax savings account (or Found) so quarterlies never surprise you. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
