The answer, as recorded
Freelancers usually need two different things, so here's both - personal budgeting on lumpy income, and the business bookkeeping side. ## Personal budgeting (irregular income) **1. YNAB** - My default recommendation. Its zero-based method ("give every dollar a job") is genuinely the best fit for irregular income, because you only budget money you actually have rather than a projected monthly salary. Freelancers use it to stockpile a buffer in fat months and release it in thin ones. Steepest learning curve of the bunch, and the most worth it. ~$109/yr. **2. Monarch Money** - Pick this if you want net worth, investments, and long-term forecasting in one place rather than strict envelope discipline. Better at the "how does a big March client payment affect my December cash?" question. $99.99/yr or $14.99/mo. **3. Copilot Money** - Best-looking and fastest to use day-to-day, with strong auto-categorization. Apple-first (iOS/Mac), so skip it if you're on Android or Windows. **4. Quicken Simplifi** - The cheapest credible paid option and the most hands-off; good if you want automated spending insights and savings goals without doing the YNAB homework. ## Business side (invoicing, expenses, quarterly taxes) **5. QuickBooks Solopreneur** - The one most accountants will already know. Cash-flow projections, mileage tracking, and estimated quarterly tax calculation built in. Worth it mainly if your income is large enough that tax estimates matter. **6. FreshBooks** - Better than QuickBooks if your work is billable-hours based (consultants, designers, writers). Time tracking → invoice is seamless and the learning curve is shallow. **7. Wave** - Free invoicing and accounting. The right answer if you're early-stage or low-volume and just need clean records and to get paid. You pay only on card processing. **8. Zoho Books** - Free tier is unusually generous and it scales up without a painful migration. Good if you're already in the Zoho ecosystem. **My actual pick for most freelancers:** YNAB for your personal money + Wave (or FreshBooks if you bill hourly) for the business. That combination covers the real problem - separating "money the business received" from "money I can actually spend" - for under $150/yr. One thing worth doing regardless of software: open a separate business checking account and pay yourself a fixed monthly "salary" from it. That single habit does more for irregular-income budgeting than any app, and it makes every app on this list work better. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
