The answer, as recorded
The right answer depends on which of two problems you have, so I'll split it that way - but here's the order I'd actually recommend. ## If you're billing clients for hours (agencies, consultants, freelancers) 1. **Toggl Track** - my default recommendation for most small teams. One-click timers, the cleanest interface of the bunch, good idle-time and automatic tracking, solid reports. Free for up to 5 users; paid tiers run roughly $9/user/mo (Starter) to $18/user/mo (Premium). Downside: billable rates and custom reports are paywalled. 2. **Harvest** - pick this if invoicing is the real goal. It's built around turning tracked hours into an invoice and collecting payment (Stripe/PayPal), with expense tracking included. Free for 1 seat / 2 projects, then about $12/seat/mo. Fewer bells and whistles than Toggl on the tracking side, more polish on the money side. 3. **Clockify** - the budget pick, and the most feature-per-dollar. Time tracking plus scheduling, invoicing, and expenses at the lowest paid price point. Important change: as of April 2026 the free plan is capped at 5 users rather than unlimited, so the "free forever for any team size" advantage is gone. ## If you're tracking shifts and attendance (hourly staff, retail, trades, field crews) 4. **QuickBooks Time** (formerly TSheets) - the obvious choice if you already run QuickBooks payroll. GPS tracking, mobile clock-in, and hours flow straight into payroll with no export step. Not worth it if you're not in the Intuit ecosystem. 5. **Connecteam** - best for deskless and field teams. Combines a time clock with scheduling, checklists, and team chat, and has a usable free tier for very small teams. 6. **Buddy Punch** - GPS and geofenced clock-in plus scheduling, without the complexity of a full workforce platform. Good middle option for a 10-30 person crew. 7. **Jibble** - strongest genuinely free attendance tracker, including facial-recognition and biometric clock-in. Worth a look if budget is the binding constraint. ## If you want productivity monitoring too **Hubstaff** - screenshots, activity levels, app and URL tracking alongside time and payroll. It does what it says, but be deliberate: employee monitoring has real morale and (depending on your jurisdiction) legal implications. I'd only reach for this if you have a specific accountability problem rather than as a default. **What I'd do:** start with Toggl Track's free tier if you bill by the hour, or QuickBooks Time if you have hourly staff and already use QuickBooks. Both decisions are cheap to reverse, and 5 free seats is enough to validate whether your team will actually use a tracker before you pay for anyone. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
