The question asked, verbatim: best time tracking software for small businesses

Brands named, in the order the engine gave

  1. Homebase mentioned
One caveat up front: most "best time tracking 2026" listicles are content marketing published by the vendors themselves (Homebase, My Hours, Apploye all rank for their own category), so treat the rankings in those posts skeptically.
  2. Clockify mentioned
Clockify - my default first suggestion for most small businesses.
  3. Toggl Track mentioned
Toggl Track - the one with the least friction, which matters more than features because the hardest part of time tracking is adoption.
  4. Harvest mentioned
Pricier at about $9/user/month, and reporting is thinner than Harvest's.
  5. QuickBooks mentioned
Time entry flows straight into invoices and expense tracking, with QuickBooks/Xero integration.
  6. Xero mentioned
Time entry flows straight into invoices and expense tracking, with QuickBooks/Xero integration.
  7. Connecteam mentioned
Connecteam - same shift-worker use case but for deskless/field crews: GPS-stamped clock-in, job-site geofencing, task assignment.
  8. Buddy Punch mentioned
Buddy Punch - a solid, unglamorous time clock with webcam/GPS punch verification and overtime alerts.
  9. Hubstaff mentioned
Hubstaff - I list it last deliberately.
  10. Timely mentioned
Two I'd skip unless you have a specific reason: Timely (AI auto-tracking is appealing in theory, but you still review and correct everything, and it's priced like a premium tool) and Jibble (good free biometric attendance, but narrower than Clockify for the same $0).
  11. Jibble mentioned
Two I'd skip unless you have a specific reason: Timely (AI auto-tracking is appealing in theory, but you still review and correct everything, and it's priced like a premium tool) and Jibble (good free biometric attendance, but narrower than Clockify for the same $0).

The answer, as recorded

Here's what I'd actually recommend, roughly in the order I'd suggest trying them. One caveat up front: most "best time tracking 2026" listicles are content marketing published by the vendors themselves (Homebase, My Hours, Apploye all rank for their own category), so treat the rankings in those posts skeptically. The pricing below is from them, but the ordering is mine. **1. Clockify** - my default first suggestion for most small businesses. The free tier is genuinely usable (unlimited projects, no expiration), so you can validate whether your team will actually log time before paying anything. Paid plans start around $3.99/user/month. Best for agencies, consultants, and anyone billing by project. **2. Toggl Track** - the one with the least friction, which matters more than features because the hardest part of time tracking is adoption. One-click timers, good desktop/mobile apps, idle detection. Pricier at about $9/user/month, and reporting is thinner than Harvest's. Best for creative teams and freelancers. **3. Harvest** - pick this if the point of tracking time is to *invoice* it. Time entry flows straight into invoices and expense tracking, with QuickBooks/Xero integration. Overkill if you don't bill hourly. **4. Homebase** - if your team is hourly shift workers (retail, restaurants, salons, clinics), this is a different product category and Homebase is the right one. Scheduling, time clock, and payroll in one place, priced per location (~$24/location/month) rather than per user, which is a big deal for a 15-person shop. **5. Connecteam** - same shift-worker use case but for deskless/field crews: GPS-stamped clock-in, job-site geofencing, task assignment. Better than Homebase if your people are spread across sites rather than in one building. **6. QuickBooks Time** (formerly TSheets) - worth it mainly if you're already on QuickBooks payroll. The integration saves real reconciliation work. On its own merits it wouldn't crack my top three. **7. Buddy Punch** - a solid, unglamorous time clock with webcam/GPS punch verification and overtime alerts. Starts ~$4.49/user/month plus a $19 base fee. Good if your driver is payroll accuracy or compliance rather than project profitability. **8. Hubstaff** - I list it last deliberately. It works well, but its selling point is employee monitoring (screenshots, activity levels, app tracking). That's a legitimate need for some contractor arrangements, and a fast way to wreck trust on a salaried team. Choose it on purpose, not by default. Two I'd skip unless you have a specific reason: **Timely** (AI auto-tracking is appealing in theory, but you still review and correct everything, and it's priced like a premium tool) and **Jibble** (good free biometric attendance, but narrower than Clockify for the same $0). If you want one answer: start on Clockify's free plan. If adoption sticks and you need invoicing, move to Harvest; if your team is hourly and shift-based, skip straight to Homebase. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
