Standalone, Teams Essentials is ~$4/user/month paid yearly, the cheapest real paid option under 10 people. Chat, meetings, and file storage in one place. Downside: it's heavier and clunkier than Slack, and Microsoft is raising Business Basic to $7 and Business Standard to $14 effective July 1, 2026. **2. Google Chat (via Google Workspace)** - if you're already on Gmail/Drive/Calendar, this is effectively $0 incremental cost. Workspace Business Starter is $7/user/month annual and bundles Chat, Meet, and 30 GB Drive. It's the simplest option, but the weakest of the big three as a standalone chat tool - fewer integrations, less polished threading. **3. Slack** - still the best pure chat experience: the best search, the deepest integration library, the best threading and channel discipline. Pro is $7.25/user/month annual ($8.75 monthly) with unlimited history and Slack AI included. The free tier's 90-day message history limit is the main thing that pushes growing teams to pay. Pick it if communication quality matters more than saving $3/head. **4. Pumble** - the value pick.
