Microsoft Teams - best default if you touch Office at all.** Teams Essentials is ~$4/user/mo, but the real play is Microsoft 365 Business Basic, which bundles chat, meetings, email, and web Office. Note the July 1, 2026 price increase: Business Basic went $6 → $7/user/mo and Business Standard $12.50 → $14. If you're already paying for M365, Teams is effectively free, which is hard to beat. **2. Google Chat - best if you're already on Gmail/Workspace.** Same logic as Teams: it comes with the suite you're probably already buying. Workspace Business Starter is ~$7/user/mo, Business Standard ~$14 if you want the full Gemini features. It's the least exciting chat app of the three, but it's integrated directly into Gmail, so adoption is nearly zero-effort. **3. Slack - best actual chat experience, and the one to pick if your stack is mixed.** Pro is $7.25/user/mo annual, Business+ $12.50. Worth the money if you lean on third-party integrations (it has by far the most), collaborate a lot with outside clients/contractors via Slack Connect, or don't want to buy a whole productivity suite. Downside is it's a pure add-on cost - you're paying for communication alone. **4.
