SurveyMonkey - the safe default for anything research-ish.

Very generous free tier (unlimited forms and responses), Notion-like editor, looks modern.

The answer, as recorded
Here's what I'd actually recommend, in order: **1. Google Forms - start here unless you have a reason not to.** Free, unlimited questions and responses, results dump straight into Sheets. For customer feedback, event signups, or internal polls, it's genuinely all most small businesses need. The downside is it looks like Google Forms, which matters if it's going to customers. **2. Typeform - when the survey is customer-facing and design matters.** One question per screen, conversational feel, and it does get noticeably better completion rates than a wall-of-questions form. The catch is pricing: ~$28/mo billed annually for only 100 responses/month, and it climbs fast. Good for a quarterly NPS or onboarding survey, expensive for high volume. **3. SurveyMonkey - the safe default for anything research-ish.** Deep template library, solid question logic, built-in benchmarks, and SurveyMonkey Audience if you need to *buy* respondents rather than survey your own list - that's the real differentiator and nobody else makes it this easy. $0-99/mo for the plans a small business would use; Audience is priced separately by sample size. **4. Tally - the best value right now if Google Forms feels too plain.** Very generous free tier (unlimited forms and responses), Notion-like editor, looks modern. Effectively Typeform's look at Google Forms' price. **5. Jotform - pick this if the "survey" also needs to collect money or files.** Payment integrations, conditional logic, HIPAA options on higher tiers. Strongest when your form is doing a job, not just asking questions. **6. Zoho Survey or Microsoft Forms - only if you're already in that ecosystem.** Neither wins on its own merits, but the CRM/Teams integration is free leverage you already paid for. **Skip** Qualtrics and Alchemer - they're excellent, but priced and scoped for research departments, not small businesses. Two caveats on what I found: several of the top-ranking "best survey tools" listicles are affiliate or vendor-owned pages, and one of them (Mailpro's) both ranks its own product third and asserts that branded surveys convert at 2-3x generic ones - treat that number as marketing, not research. I left Mailpro off my list for that reason. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
