The answer, as recorded

"Subscription billing" for a nonprofit usually means one of two things - recurring donations, or real subscription/dues billing (memberships, program fees, SaaS-style plans). Here's what I'd actually name for each. ## If it's recurring donations (monthly giving) 1. **Donorbox** - my default recommendation for most small-to-midsize orgs. Recurring giving is the core of the product, not an afterthought: donor-managed subscriptions, failed-payment retries and dunning emails, upgrade asks, and a fast checkout flow. 1.5% platform fee plus processing on the standard plan, with a usable free tier. Best balance of price and depth. 2. **Givebutter** - best if you also run events, peer-to-peer, or crowdfunding alongside monthly giving. Platform fee is $0 by default (funded by optional donor tips), so your effective cost can be near zero, and it includes a light built-in CRM. Downside: the tip model means your revenue depends on donor behavior you don't control. 3. **Zeffy** - pick this if cost is the binding constraint. Genuinely $0 platform *and* $0 processing fees, which no one else matches; recurring donations are well supported and reviewers rate them highly. Tradeoffs: US/Canada only, less extensible, and the whole model rests on donors tipping (reported opt-in around 80%, tips averaging ~15%+ - treat those numbers as the vendor-friendly version). 4. **Bloomerang** or **Virtuous** - once you're past roughly $500K-$1M in revenue and the real problem is donor retention and stewardship, not the payment form. Both are donor CRMs with recurring giving built in, so lapsed-gift workflows and sustainer reporting live where your data already is. Much more expensive; overkill if you just need a monthly gift form. Pair any of these with **Stripe's nonprofit discount** - 2.2% + $0.30 instead of 2.9% + $0.30. It requires applying ([email protected]) and 80%+ of your volume being tax-deductible donations; Amex, memberships, ticketing, and international cards are excluded. ## If it's actual subscription/dues billing 1. **Join It** - purpose-built for associations, clubs, and nonprofits: dues tiers, auto-renewal, reminders, member directory and portal. ~$29-$199/mo with an extra 10% off annual plans for nonprofits. The right-sized answer for most membership orgs. 2. **Stripe Billing** - what I'd use if you have any developer capacity or sell non-donation subscriptions. Proration, trials, tax handling, and dunning are best-in-class, and it's cheap. Note the donation discount does *not* apply to membership revenue. 3. **Outseta** - subscriptions plus CRM, email, and member authentication in one, from ~$47/mo. Good when the "membership" is gated content or a community site. 4. **Chargebee** - only if you've outgrown the above: complex plan catalogs, multi-entity, revenue recognition. Enterprise pricing and real implementation effort; most nonprofits don't need it. **Short version:** recurring donations → Donorbox, or Zeffy if fee-free matters most; membership dues → Join It, or Stripe Billing if you can build on it. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
