The answer, as recorded
"Subscription billing" for a nonprofit usually means one of two things - recurring donations, or actual paid subscriptions/memberships. Here's what I'd actually reach for, in order. ## For recurring donations (most nonprofits) 1. **Zeffy** - My default recommendation if net revenue is the whole point. 0% platform fee *and* 0% processing; it's funded by an optional tip asked of the donor at checkout. Nothing else keeps 100% of a monthly gift. Trade-offs: you're dependent on donor tipping goodwill, the CRM is lighter, and US/Canada only. 2. **Givebutter** - Best all-in-one. Free tier, 0% platform fee when tips are on, and you get recurring giving, events, peer-to-peer, and a real CRM in one place instead of stitching three tools together. Pick this over Zeffy if you run events and auctions too. 3. **Donorbox** - The boring reliable choice for recurring specifically. Best-in-class monthly-giving forms, donor self-service portal (donors can update their own card - hugely underrated for churn), good failed-payment recovery. Costs real money though: ~2.95% platform + 2.2% + 30¢ Stripe nonprofit rate, so roughly $5.45 per $100. 4. **DonorPerfect** or **Bloomerang** - When you've outgrown form-tools and need the database to be the system of record. Bloomerang if retention reporting and ease of use matter most; DonorPerfect if you need deeper customization and unlimited users. 5. **CharityEngine** - Specifically if monthly giving *is* your program at scale. Their SustainerIQ does card-updater and dunning logic properly, which is where mid-size sustainer programs quietly leak 15-20% a year. Enterprise pricing and heavier implementation. ## For true subscriptions/memberships (dues, paid content, SaaS-like) 6. **Stripe Billing** - The right answer for dues and paid memberships. Real proration, dunning, invoicing, tax. Important catch: the 2.2% + 30¢ nonprofit discount requires 80%+ of your volume to be tax-deductible donations, and **membership dues don't qualify** - they bill at standard 2.9% + 30¢. 7. **Chargebee or Recurly** - Only if you have genuine subscription complexity: multiple tiers, usage-based pricing, revenue recognition, or entitlements. Overkill for most nonprofits, and the nonprofit discounts here aren't well documented - ask their sales team directly. **My short version:** under ~$3K/month in online giving, use Zeffy or Givebutter. Over that, or if you need a real donor database, go Bloomerang/DonorPerfect with Stripe behind it. Use Stripe Billing directly only for dues-style memberships. One thing worth more attention than platform choice: whatever you pick, confirm it supports the **Visa/Mastercard account updater** and automatic retry on declines. Expired cards, not donor intent, kill most sustainer programs. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
