Short version: "subscription billing" splits into two different jobs, and the right tool depends on which one you have. Here's what I'd actually recommend, in order. ## If you're billing retainer clients monthly **1. Stripe Billing (+ Payment Links)** - my default recommendation. You create a subscription per client, their card is on file, and it charges automatically every month with no invoice chasing. Fees are the lowest of anything here (~2.9% + $0.30, plus a small recurring-revenue fee), it handles dunning and failed-card retries, and you can send a client a hosted link in about two minutes without writing code. Downside: it's a payments tool, not a freelance business tool - no proposals, contracts, or time tracking. **2. Bonsai (~$25/mo)** - best single tool if your retainers come with contracts and scoped hours. Proposals, e-signature contracts, time tracking, and retainer billing are all in one place, and it does true auto-charge (stored card, charged automatically) rather than just emailing an invoice. This is the one I'd pick if you want the whole client lifecycle in one subscription. **3. FreshBooks (~$23/mo Lite, 5 clients → $43 Plus, 50 clients)** - pick this if bookkeeping matters as much as billing. Best-in-class recurring invoices, automatic late-payment reminders, and a client portal that doesn't make clients create an account. One thing to verify before you buy: its recurring invoices are primarily *auto-send* (client still pays manually), and auto-charge availability varies by plan - confirm on the tier you're choosing, because it changes whether you're still chasing payments. **4. Wave** - the cheap answer. Free tier covers recurring invoices; Wave Pro (~$19/mo) adds auto-charge. You pay normal card processing per transaction. Genuinely good if you have a handful of clients and don't want a monthly software bill. ## If you're selling a subscription product (SaaS, templates, memberships) **5. Paddle** - merchant of record, meaning Paddle is the legal seller and absorbs VAT/GST/sales-tax registration and remittance worldwide. Costs ~5% + $0.50, which is real money, but for a solo operator selling internationally it replaces a problem you genuinely cannot handle alone. This is what I'd recommend for an international subscription product. **6. Lemon Squeezy** - same model and roughly the same price (5% + $0.50), nicer to set up, historically the solo-creator favorite. Caveat: Stripe acquired it in 2024, and as of January 2026 the team is building migration paths to Stripe Managed Payments. No sunset date announced and it still works fine - but I wouldn't start a new business on it today when Paddle or Stripe Managed Payments are stable choices. **7. Invoice Ninja / Hiveage** - worth knowing as the budget/self-host option. Both do auto-charge recurring billing at a fraction of Bonsai or FreshBooks, and Invoice Ninja can be self-hosted for free if you don't mind running it. **The one distinction that matters most:** "recurring invoices" means two different things. *Auto-send* emails the invoice on a schedule and you still wait to get paid. *Auto-charge* stores the card and pulls the money. If your goal is predictable income without chasing anyone, insist on auto-charge - that's Stripe, Bonsai, Wave Pro, Hiveage, or Invoice Ninja. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
