## The short version: for most small businesses, you shouldn't buy one at all Here's what I'd actually recommend, in order: **1. Let's Encrypt - free, and the right answer for ~90% of small business sites.** Same TLS encryption, same browser trust as any paid cert. 90-day certs with automated renewal via ACME. The only thing you give up is organization-validated identity (more on that below). If your site is a brochure site, a WordPress site, a booking page, or even a Stripe/Shopify-backed store, this is it. **2. Your web host's built-in SSL - if it's already there, use that.** Most decent hosts (SiteGround, Cloudways, Kinsta, DreamHost, Hostinger, cPanel's AutoSSL) provision Let's Encrypt or ZeroSSL automatically and handle renewal. The value isn't the certificate, it's that someone else owns the renewal automation. A cert that silently fails to renew is far more damaging than a cheap cert. **3. Cloudflare (free plan) - best if you want the cert plus a CDN, WAF, and DNS in one place.** Universal SSL covers your apex and one subdomain level, auto-renewed. Caveat: it's an *edge* certificate - it only works for domains proxied through Cloudflare and you can't export it to another server. You still want a cert on your origin (Cloudflare's free Origin CA cert handles that). **4. ZeroSSL - the best free alternative if you want a GUI instead of command-line ACME.** Unlimited free 90-day DV certs, portable to any server, wildcard and multi-domain via DNS validation. Good when you need a cert file in hand and don't have shell access. **5. Sectigo PositiveSSL (usually cheapest via Namecheap or SSLs.com) - if you genuinely need a paid DV cert.** Realistic reasons: a compliance checkbox, a vendor contract, or a platform that won't accept Let's Encrypt. Roughly $6-10/year through resellers. Don't pay more than that for DV. **6. DigiCert or Sectigo OV/EV - only if you have a real identity-verification requirement.** Think fintech, healthcare, B2B where a procurement questionnaire asks for OV. Expect $150-600+/year and a few days of paperwork. ## Two things that should shape your decision **Browsers stopped showing the company name for EV certs back in 2019.** The green address bar is gone in Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. If a reseller is upselling you EV for "visitor trust," that benefit effectively no longer exists for ordinary visitors. **The "paid certs last a year" advantage is disappearing.** The CA/Browser Forum voted in May 2025 to cut maximum TLS certificate lifetimes on a schedule: 398 days today → **200 days on March 15, 2026** → 100 days in 2027 → **47 days in 2029**. Every certificate, paid or free, is heading toward mandatory automation. So pick based on who automates renewal well, not on validity period. This also means that if you buy a paid cert today partly to avoid frequent renewals, that reasoning expires within a couple of years. **What you're actually paying for with a paid cert:** identity validation, a warranty (which is insurance for relying parties, not for you, and almost never pays out), phone support, and a site seal. For a small business, the support line is the only one of those with real practical value - and it matters mainly if you have no technical help and are installing manually. I leaned on the CA/Browser Forum policy changes and vendor documentation for the factual claims above, and the ranking reflects my own judgment rather than those listicles.
