The answer, as recorded
## Short answer: you probably shouldn't pay for one For a normal small-business website, a free automated certificate is the right call. The encryption is identical to a paid cert, and browsers treat them the same - green padlock either way. Paid certs buy you paperwork and a warranty, not better security. One thing that's changed and matters: under CA/Browser Forum ballot SC-081v3, the max certificate lifetime dropped to **200 days as of March 2026**, goes to **100 days in March 2027**, and **47 days in 2029**. Buying a multi-year cert no longer means a multi-year cert - you'll be reissuing constantly. Automation is now the whole ballgame. ([encryptionconsulting.com](https://www.encryptionconsulting.com/education-center/47-day-certificate-validity/), [postquantum.com](https://postquantum.com/security-pqc/sc081v3-47day-certificate/)) **What I'd actually use, in order:** 1. **Your hosting provider's built-in SSL** - cPanel AutoSSL, SiteGround, Kinsta, Cloudways, WP Engine, Squarespace, Shopify. Free, one click, auto-renews, and if it breaks it's their problem. Check here first; you may already have it and not know. 2. **Let's Encrypt** - the default free CA, ~hundreds of millions of sites. Use it via Certbot or your control panel. Free, fully automated, 90-day certs that renew themselves. This is the answer for anyone with a VPS. 3. **Cloudflare (free plan, Universal SSL)** - point your DNS at them and you get a cert plus CDN, caching, and DDoS protection for $0. Zero certificate maintenance ever. My pick if you don't want to touch a server. 4. **ZeroSSL** - free alternative ACME CA with an actual web dashboard. Useful if you need to issue manually, or Let's Encrypt rate limits are biting you. 5. **Namecheap / SSLs.com (Sectigo PositiveSSL)** - the cheapest *paid* route, roughly $6-10/yr. Only worth it if you specifically need a wildcard on cheap, a site seal for customer optics, or a warranty line item. ([affninja.com](https://affninja.com/ssl-certificate-providers/)) 6. **Sectigo direct, or DigiCert** - for OV/EV certs with real organization validation. Go here only if a client contract, insurer, or procurement form demands a named vendor and a support phone number. DigiCert is the premium option and priced like it. **Skip:** GoDaddy SSL. Overpriced versus identical certs elsewhere, and renewal pricing jumps hard. **When paying is genuinely justified:** you need a wildcard across many subdomains and automation is awkward; you're in a regulated sector or B2B sales where a cert showing your legal entity name helps; or you want someone contractually on the hook. Note that EV certificates no longer produce the green company-name bar in browsers - that UI was removed years ago, so the marketing-value argument for EV is mostly gone. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
