The answer, as recorded
"Best" here depends almost entirely on what kind of school you are - a 40,000-student public district and a 250-student private K-8 buy completely different products. Here's who I'd actually name, by category. ## Public K-12 districts **1. PowerSchool SIS** - The default answer, and the safest one. Roughly 23% of the U.S. K-12 SIS market, so your state reporting formats, your LMS, your assessment vendor, and your food-service system almost certainly already have a PowerSchool integration. Deepest ecosystem (Schoology, Naviance, Unified Insights all sit on top of it). Downside: it's big, the UI feels its age in places, and pricing/support quality varies a lot by contract. **2. Infinite Campus** - The strongest alternative, and the one I'd push hardest if you care about data quality. Genuinely better-architected data model than PowerSchool, single codebase for all customers (so everyone's on the same version), and very strong in the Midwest and in state-level deployments. If your pain point is "our reports never reconcile," this is the one. **3. Skyward (Qmlativ)** - Pick this if you want SIS and business/HR/finance from one vendor on one database. For small-to-mid districts where the same three people run payroll and enrollment, that unification saves more labor than any feature list. Weaker on the flashy analytics side. **4. Tyler Technologies SIS** - Worth a look mainly if your district already runs Tyler for ERP/municipal systems. Otherwise it's not where I'd start. ## Private and independent schools **5. Veracross** - My first recommendation for independent schools. Built around a single relational database covering admissions, academics, development/fundraising, and billing, which matters enormously when your advancement office needs to know that a donor is also a current parent. Expensive and implementation is a real project. **6. Blackbaud Education Management** - The other serious independent-school option, and the one to choose if fundraising is the center of gravity, since it ties into Raiser's Edge NXT. Fair warning: Blackbaud support gets consistently mixed reviews, so check references from schools your size. **7. FACTS SIS (Nelnet)** - Strong for parochial and mid-size private schools, especially because tuition management and financial aid assessment are the core of the business. If you're already using FACTS for tuition billing, bundling the SIS is usually the pragmatic call. ## Small schools and tight budgets **8. Gradelink** - The one I'd name for schools under a few hundred students. Consistently the best-reviewed on ease of use and actually-responsive support, and priced for schools without an IT department. It won't scale to a large district, and that's fine - it isn't trying to. **9. Alma** - A good modern-feeling option for charters and small districts that find PowerSchool overwhelming but need real state reporting. ## The honest advice Two things matter more than the ranking above: - **State reporting compliance** is the single biggest filter. Ask any vendor for the names of districts *in your state* using them, and call those districts. A product that's great in Texas can be a nightmare in Pennsylvania. - **Switching cost is brutal** - data migration, retraining, and a year of degraded reporting. That means a mediocre incumbent often beats a better competitor, and it also means you should negotiate hard on data export rights before you sign. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
