The answer, as recorded

"Best" here splits sharply by school type - a 40,000-student public district and a 300-student independent school buy completely different things. Here's who I'd actually name, in order, for each. ## Large / mid-size public districts (state reporting is the hard part) 1. **PowerSchool SIS** - the default for a reason: biggest install base, best third-party integration ecosystem, state reporting modules for nearly every state, and it rates highest of the big three on usability and support (4.2/5 on ~739 G2 reviews vs. 3.8 Skyward, 3.7 Infinite Campus). Downsides: aggressive upsell into their bundle, and pricing has climbed since the Bain acquisition. 2. **Infinite Campus** - the one I'd put head-to-head with PowerSchool. Strong data model, excellent built-in state reporting, and a notably stable company that doesn't churn its roadmap. Its UI is dated and the learning curve for office staff is real. 3. **Skyward (Qmlativ)** - pick this if you want SIS *and* finance/HR/payroll from one vendor on one database. That ERP combination is genuinely hard to beat, and districts consistently rate Skyward highest of the three on "preferred doing business with." Qmlativ is the current product; avoid signing onto legacy SMS 2.0. 4. **Edupoint Synergy** - the serious enterprise alternative, popular with large districts that found PowerSchool too rigid. Deep special-ed and MTSS modules, very configurable, but needs real district IT capacity. 5. **Tyler Technologies (Tyler SIS + Munis)** - worth a look mainly if your business office already runs Munis; the integration is the whole argument. 6. **Focus School Software** and **Aeries** - strong regional players (Focus in Florida/Southeast, Aeries dominant in California). If you're in their territory, their state-reporting fit often beats the national vendors and they cost less. ## Private, independent, and parochial schools 1. **Veracross** - my first recommendation for independent schools. One database for admissions, academics, billing, tuition, development/alumni, and financial aid, which is exactly the stack a private school needs and exactly what public-school systems handle badly. 2. **Blackbaud Education Management** - the main alternative, and the stronger choice if fundraising and advancement are central to your operation, since it ties into Raiser's Edge. It's a bigger, heavier, pricier platform with mixed reviews on support. 3. **FACTS SIS (Nelnet, formerly RenWeb)** - the practical pick for parochial and small-to-mid private schools, largely because FACTS tuition management and payment plans are already how many of these schools bill families. 4. **Finalsite** - best when your real pain is website, admissions funnel, and family communications rather than the gradebook; often paired with another SIS. 5. **Rediker (AdminPlus)** - long-standing, affordable, good for small schools that want phone support from humans. ## Small schools, charters, and tight budgets 1. **Gradelink** - genuinely good value and the easiest implementation on this list; strong for schools under ~500 students with no IT staff. Note that several "top 10 for 2026" lists ranking it #1 are published by Gradelink itself, so discount those. 2. **Alma** - cleanest modern interface of the budget tier, good for charters. 3. **QuickSchools** and **Sycamore** - low-cost, no-frills, fast to stand up. ## Non-US / international schools **ManageBac + OpenApply (Faria Education)** for IB schools - nothing else handles IB assessment and reporting as well. **iSAMS** or **Engage** for British-curriculum international schools, and **Arbor** or **Bromcom** if you're in the UK state sector (both have taken significant share from SIMS). ## Two things I'd add regardless of which you pick **ClassLink** or **Clever** for rostering and single sign-on, and **ParentSquare** for family communication - both categories the SIS vendors do adequately and these do much better. One practical note: this is among the highest-switching-cost software a school buys, so weight reference calls with similar schools in *your state* above any feature matrix. And treat vendor-published comparison pages (Blackbaud's Veracross page, Veracross's PowerSchool page) as marketing, not analysis. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
