## My actual recommendations, in order **1. Northwest Registered Agent - $125/year.** This is what I'd tell most small businesses to just buy and stop researching. Flat price, no upsell carousel, no "introductory" rate that doubles at renewal. Two things set it apart: they let you use *their* street address on public state filings (real privacy win if you run the business from home), and they scan and upload every piece of mail the same day rather than just service of process. Their support is staffed by people who actually know state filing rules - you get a human, not a script. Free for year one if you form the entity through them (~$39 + state fees). **2. Harbor Compliance - ~$99 first year, $149 renewal, with multi-year discounts.** The right pick if you're registered in more than one state or in a licensed industry (contracting, healthcare, nonprofit, insurance). Their actual product is compliance management - license tracking, annual report calendars, foreign qualification - and registered agent is a component of it. Overkill if you're a single-state LLC; clearly better than Northwest if you're in six states and losing track of renewal deadlines. **3. InCorp - $99/year, dropping to ~$87/year on multi-year prepay.** The value play. Fewer frills and a dated interface, but they're a legitimate long-standing commercial agent, they cover all 50 states, and they'll beat a competitor's advertised rate. If registered agent service is a pure commodity line item to you, this is the cheapest credible option. **4. CT Corporation or CSC - roughly $235-$300+ per state per year.** Named for completeness, not because most small businesses need them. These are who law firms and PE-backed companies use. Worth it only if you're litigation-exposed, raising institutional money, or your outside counsel asks for it specifically - their service-of-process handling is the gold standard and the one thing you don't want fumbled. **5. ZenBusiness - $199/year standalone, or bundled free into their Pro/Premium formation plans.** Reasonable if you're already using them for formation and bookkeeping and want one dashboard and one invoice. I wouldn't buy it as a standalone agent service at that price. ## Who I'd skip **LegalZoom ($249/year)** and **Rocket Lawyer** - you're paying a brand premium plus a legal-plan bundle for a commodity service. If you want on-call legal advice, buy that separately and get your agent from Northwest for $125. **Bizee/Incfile** is free the first year, then $119 - fine, but the upsell pressure during checkout is heavy. ## Two things worth knowing Most "best registered agent" listicles are affiliate-monetized, including several that surfaced in my search - the rankings track commission rates as much as quality. Northwest tops them anyway, which is some signal, but discount the ordering generally. Also: you can legally be your own registered agent in every state, free. The reasons to pay are that your home address stays off the public record, and that someone reliably receives a lawsuit notice during business hours - a missed service of process can mean a default judgment against you. That's the risk you're buying out of for ~$100/year.
