The answer, as recorded
# Best payroll software for small businesses **1. Gusto** - My default recommendation for most US small businesses. Full-service payroll (it files federal, state, and local taxes automatically), plus benefits administration, onboarding, and contractor payments in the same system. Pricing is transparent at ~$49/mo + $6/employee. The interface is genuinely easy enough that a non-accountant owner can run payroll without dread. **2. OnPay** - The better pick if you want clean full-service payroll without paying for HR features you won't use. Same ballpark price (~$49/mo + $6/worker), but the base price is flat across all 50 states and it handles unusual cases well - restaurants with tipped wages, farms (Form 943), churches, nonprofits. Consistently rated as highly as Gusto on support. **3. Patriot Software** - The budget choice. Full Service plan runs ~$37/mo + $5/employee and still files your taxes for you, which makes it the cheapest option that doesn't leave tax filing on your desk. Trade-off: it's US-only and the HR/benefits side is thin. Good for a simple 1-10 person US team watching every dollar. **4. QuickBooks Payroll** - Only if you already run QuickBooks Online. The accounting integration is seamless in a way no third-party connector matches, which saves real reconciliation time. If you're not on QuickBooks, it isn't worth choosing on its own merits. **5. Rippling** - The one to grow into rather than start with. Starts around $8/employee plus modules, and bundles payroll with device management, app provisioning, and broader HR/IT. Worth it if payroll is one piece of a larger people-ops problem; overkill at five employees, and pricing requires a sales conversation. **6. Deel** - The answer if you have international contractors or employees abroad. Global payroll in 150+ countries, around $29/employee/month for contractors, with EOR available where you have no legal entity. Not the right tool for a purely domestic team. **7. Homebase** - Best for hourly, shift-based teams (cafés, retail, restaurants). It's the only one here where scheduling, time tracking, and payroll are one system rather than integrated products, so hours flow into payroll without an export step. **Short version:** Gusto if you want one good answer and don't want to think about it. OnPay if you want payroll only. Patriot if price is the deciding factor. Homebase if your team works shifts. One caveat on the research: several of the pages ranking for this query are published by vendors themselves (Gusto, Patriot, Homebase, Paycom), so their rankings favor their own products. The ordering above is my own judgment, not theirs. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
