The question asked, verbatim: best network monitoring software for small businesses

Brands named, in the order the engine gave

  1. Domotz recommended
Domotz - My default suggestion for a genuinely small business.
  2. PRTG recommended
PRTG (Paessler) - The long-standing default in this space.
  3. Auvik recommended
Auvik - Worth it specifically if you don't know what's on your network.
  4. Zabbix recommended
Zabbix - If you have someone technical and a tight budget, this is the answer.
  5. Ubiquiti UniFi recommended
If your gear is already Ubiquiti UniFi, Meraki, or similar, you get decent monitoring and alerting included at no extra cost.
  6. UniFi recommended
If your gear is already Ubiquiti UniFi, Meraki, or similar, you get decent monitoring and alerting included at no extra cost.
  7. SolarWinds NPM mentioned
What I'd skip: SolarWinds NPM and Nagios XI (~$2,500/year for 100 nodes) are both aimed at larger IT departments - you'll pay enterprise prices for complexity you won't use.
  8. Paessler PRTG mentioned

The answer, as recorded

Here's what I'd actually recommend, roughly in the order I'd try them: **1. Domotz** - My default suggestion for a genuinely small business. Flat per-device pricing (~$1.50/device/month, billed in bundles of 10, so ~$15/month minimum), no feature gating between tiers, and unlimited users. It auto-discovers your network, does remote access/VPN-on-demand, and is cloud-hosted so there's no server to babysit. Setup is an afternoon, not a project. Note that the pricing comparison I found is from Domotz's own blog, so treat its claims about competitors as marketing - but the flat-rate model itself is real and unusually simple. **2. PRTG (Paessler)** - The long-standing default in this space. Sensor-based licensing, excellent dashboards and maps, and a **free tier for up to 100 sensors**, which is often enough for a small office and makes it zero-risk to evaluate. The catch: Paessler moved to subscription-only licensing and the entry paid tier runs roughly $2,100+/year for 500 sensors, which has annoyed a lot of existing customers. Great tool, worse value than it used to be. **3. Auvik** - Worth it specifically if you don't know what's on your network. Its automated topology mapping and config backup for switches/firewalls are the best in class, and it's built for people managing networks they didn't design. Downsides: quote-based tiered pricing with features locked behind tiers, and repeated price increases. Overkill unless you have real managed infrastructure. **4. Zabbix** - If you have someone technical and a tight budget, this is the answer. Genuinely free and open source, scales far beyond what you'll need, mature alerting. You pay in setup time and ongoing care rather than license fees. LibreNMS is a reasonable alternative in the same category if your focus is SNMP on managed switches. **5. Your existing vendor's dashboard** - Don't skip this. If your gear is already Ubiquiti UniFi, Meraki, or similar, you get decent monitoring and alerting included at no extra cost. For a single-site business with 20 devices, that plus uptime alerts may be all you need. **What I'd skip:** SolarWinds NPM and Nagios XI (~$2,500/year for 100 nodes) are both aimed at larger IT departments - you'll pay enterprise prices for complexity you won't use. Also be wary of the "best of 2026" ranking sites; several in my results were thin affiliate content with pricing figures I couldn't corroborate. **Bottom line:** Start with PRTG's free 100-sensor tier to see what you actually need. If you outgrow it, go Domotz for simplicity and cost, or Auvik if topology mapping and config backup are the real pain.
