The answer, as recorded

"Remote teams" splits into two different problems, so here's what I'd actually name for each. ## If you're monitoring distributed sites/offices and the IT team is remote 1. **Auvik** - my default recommendation. It auto-discovers and draws live topology maps, so you can troubleshoot a branch office or client site you've never physically visited. Cloud-hosted (nothing to stand up), per-billable-device pricing, includes SNMP/WMI, syslog, NetFlow, and config backup. Strongest fit for lean IT teams and MSPs. 2. **Domotz** - cheaper and lighter than Auvik, with genuinely good remote hands: remote access, VPN-on-demand, power control/reboots. Great for lots of small sites (retail, AV, IoT-heavy environments) where you want to avoid a truck roll. 3. **ManageEngine OpManager** - best value if you want deep traditional monitoring and don't mind self-hosting. Automated discovery, solid performance tracking, ties into ITSM workflows. Noticeably less expensive than SolarWinds for similar depth. 4. **PRTG (Paessler)** - sensor-based licensing, very customizable, easy to learn. Reviewers consistently flag resource efficiency and scaling as weak spots, so I'd keep it to small/mid environments rather than sprawling ones. 5. **Datadog Network Monitoring** - don't buy this as a standalone. But if you're already on Datadog for apps and infra, adding the network module is clearly better than bolting on a second tool and a second alerting pipeline. 6. **Zabbix / LibreNMS** - the free self-hosted route. Capable and no license cost, but you're paying in engineering hours. Only worth it if you have someone who wants to own it. ## If the actual problem is remote employees' home internet, VPN, and SaaS performance Classic network monitoring won't see any of this - the traffic never touches your network. You want digital experience monitoring: 1. **Cisco ThousandEyes** - the strongest for tracing a path from an employee's laptop through their ISP, your VPN/SASE, and into the SaaS app. Best tool for proving the problem is Comcast and not you. 2. **Nexthink** - more endpoint- and employee-centric: device health, collaboration-tool quality, Digital Experience Scores, plus automated self-service fixes pushed to the user. Better for broad DEX programs than deep network path analysis. 3. **Catchpoint** - its Employee Experience Monitoring combines endpoint analytics with global active monitoring and user sentiment. Good middle ground, and often more affordable than ThousandEyes. **Short version:** small-to-mid distributed IT, remote admins → Auvik. Many small sites on a budget → Domotz. Already running Datadog → just add their network module. The real pain is remote employees' connectivity → ThousandEyes.
